L1definition
tathā kṛtāparādhasya priyasya pratibhedanāt |
tathālikewise — still working through narma, the loving banter of the last kārikāइसी प्रकार, वैसे ही
kṛtāparādhasya priyasyaof the beloved who has done some wrong genitive governed by pratibhedanāt — the one who is reproached; kṛta 'done' + aparādha 'offense', priya 'the beloved (a man)'जिसने अपराध किया है उस प्रियतम (नायक) का — यही उलाहने का पात्र है
pratibhedanātbecause she needles and reproaches him ablative of cause — the occasion from which the revealing (L2) springs; prati + bhedana 'piercing, taunting'ताना मारने के, उलाहना देने के कारण — जिससे (आगे कहा जाने वाला) प्रकट करना उपजता है
tathā — likewise; kṛtāparādhasya priyasya — of the beloved who has done some wrong; pratibhedanāt — because she needles and reproaches him.
Rūpa keeps working through narma, the loving teasing set out in the previous kārikā. Now he takes up one of its varieties, the revealing of the desire for union. Here is the occasion for it: the beloved has committed some offense (kṛtāparādha), and she needles and reproaches him for it (pratibhedana). Out of that very reproaching her longing for his company comes to light. The finite claim — that this revealing is three-fold — lands in the next line.
narma is playful, love-charged banter between lovers. The previous kārikā (8.171) reckoned it three-fold, one type being sambhogecchā-prakaṭana, 'the revealing of the desire for union'. This kārikā takes up that type and, on the occasion of an offending beloved being reproached, subdivides it further.
L2definition
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanaṁ tridhā vāg-veṣa-ceṣṭitaiḥ ||
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanaṁthe revealing of the desire for union — the variety of narma being defined nominative, the subject; sambhoga 'union, love-union' + icchā 'desire' + prakaṭana 'making manifest'मिलन की इच्छा का प्रकट करना — यही कर्ता (वर्ण्य विषय) है
vāg-veṣa-ceṣṭitaiḥby means of speech, dress, and gesture — the three channels that make it three-fold instrumental plural of means, answering tridhā; vāc 'words' + veṣa 'dress, appearance' + ceṣṭita 'bodily action, gesture'वाणी, वेष और चेष्टा के द्वारा — इन्हीं तीन साधनों से (तीन प्रकार बनते हैं)
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanaṁ — the revealing of the desire for union; vāg-veṣa-ceṣṭitaiḥ — by speech, dress, and gesture; tridhā — is three-fold.
Here is the definition proper. The revealing of the desire for union (sambhogecchā-prakaṭana) comes in three forms, sorted by the means through which she shows it: through her words (vāc), through her dress and appearance (veṣa), and through her gestures (ceṣṭita). So a single mood — the wish to be united with the beloved — surfaces along three channels. The kārikās that follow illustrate each in turn, beginning with the revealing by speech.
The three means are matched to tridhā: vāc (what she says), veṣa (how she dresses and presents herself), and ceṣṭita (what she does with body and face). The next unit (8.173) gives the udāharaṇa for the first, 'by speech' (vācā), quoting Padyāvalī 207.
tathā kṛtāparādhasya priyasya pratibhedanāt sambhogecchā-prakaṭanaṁ vāg-veṣa-ceṣṭitaiḥ tridhā [bhavati].
tathā kṛtāparādhasya priyasya pratibhedanāt vāg-veṣa-ceṣṭitaiḥ tridhā sambhogecchā-prakaṭanaṁ (bhavati)।
In the same way — still within narma, the loving banter of the previous kārikā — when the beloved has committed some offense and she needles and reproaches him for it, her revealing of the desire for union (sambhogecchā-prakaṭana) that springs from that reproaching is of three kinds, according to whether she shows it through her words, through her dress and bearing, or through her gestures.
A definition (lakṣaṇa): it takes up sambhogecchā-prakaṭana, a variety of narma, on the occasion of reproaching an offending beloved, and divides it into three by its means — vāc, veṣa, and ceṣṭita.
