śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ narma trividhaṁ parikīrtitam |
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁthe narma born of śṛṅgāra (the love-mood) and hāsya (the comic mood) — the first of the three kinds named in the last kārikā qualifies narma; -ja 'born of' — this compound was one of the three types (śṛṅgāra-hāsya-ja, śuddha-hāsya-ja, bhaya-hāsya-ja) of kārikā 258शृंगार और हास्य से उत्पन्न (जो नर्म) — यह उन तीन भेदों (शृंगार-हास्य-ज, शुद्ध-हास्य-ज, भय-हास्य-ज) में पहला है
narmanarma — refined, non-vulgar playful banter — the thing being definedनर्म (प्रेमपूर्ण विनोद, परिहास)
trividhaṁis itself of three kindsतीन प्रकार का
parikīrtitamso it is declared, handed down passive past participle — marks this as the settled classification, not Rūpa's own coinage(यों) कहा गया है — यह प्रसिद्ध, निश्चित वर्गीकरण है, रूप गोस्वामी की अपनी नयी कल्पना नहीं
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ narma — the narma born of śṛṅgāra and hāsya; trividham — [is] threefold; parikīrtitam — so it is declared.
The last kārikā split narma (refined playful banter) into three: the kind born of śṛṅgāra and hāsya, the kind born of pure hāsya, and the kind born of fear-plus-hāsya. Rūpa now takes the first of those three — narma born of śṛṅgāra and hāsya — and says that it is itself threefold. 'Declared' (parikīrtita) flags this as the established, handed-down division. The three grounds of the split come in the next line.
This continues the analysis of narma begun in kārikā 258, which made narma threefold (śṛṅgāra-hāsya-ja, śuddha-hāsya-ja, bhaya-hāsya-ja). Here the first of those three sub-types, śṛṅgāra-hāsya-ja narma, is taken up and subdivided again into three.
L2definition
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanād anurāga-niveśanāt ||
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanādbecause one kind reveals the longing for union — the first of the three grounds ablative of ground, explaining trividham of L1; sambhoga-icchā 'the desire for union / enjoyment' + prakaṭana 'making it show, disclosing'क्योंकि (उससे) संभोग अर्थात् मिलन की इच्छा प्रकट होती है — यह पहला आधार
anurāga-niveśanātand because another kind implants anurāga (deep, growing love) — the second ground second ablative of ground, paired with the first; niveśana 'settling, fixing in [the beloved]'क्योंकि (उससे) प्रिय में अनुराग स्थापित हो जाता है — दूसरा आधार
sambhogecchā-prakaṭanāt — from the disclosing of the longing for union; anurāga-niveśanāt — and from the implanting of anurāga.
These two ablatives give the grounds on which the śṛṅgāra-hāsya-ja narma is split. One kind works by revealing the longing for union (sambhogecchā-prakaṭana); another works by implanting anurāga, deep and growing love, in the beloved (anurāga-niveśana). Only two of the promised three grounds appear in this line. The third — rebuffing a beloved who has given offense — opens the next kārikā (tathā ... kṛtāparādhasya priyasya pratibhedanāt), which then goes on to subdivide the first ground itself.
The count 'threefold' (trividha) in L1 is completed only across the line-break: two grounds here, the third (kṛtāparādhasya priyasya pratibhedana, 'rebuffing the offending beloved') carried by the tathā that begins kārikā 260. The three grounds are thus: disclosing the desire for union, implanting anurāga, and rebuffing the erring beloved.
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ narma sambhogecchā-prakaṭanāt anurāga-niveśanāt [ca kṛtāparādha-priya-pratibhedanāt] trividhaṁ parikīrtitam.
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ narma sambhogecchā-prakaṭanād anurāga-niveśanāt (च) trividhaṁ parikīrtitam।
The narma born of śṛṅgāra and hāsya is itself declared to be of three kinds: [the first works] by disclosing the longing for union, [the second] by implanting anurāga (deep, growing love) in the beloved, [and the third, carried over into the next kārikā, by rebuffing a beloved who has given offense].
A definition kārikā: it takes the first of the three narma-types named in kārikā 258 (śṛṅgāra-hāsya-ja narma) and subdivides it again into three, listing the grounds of the split — two here, the third spilling into kārikā 260.
