sarveṣāṁ kāraṇa-vaśāt kāryo bhāṣā-vyatikramaḥ |
sarveṣāṁfor all [the characters just assigned their stage-language] genitive plural — "in the case of everyone"; reaches back over the whole roster of speakers set out in the preceding kārikās (gods, sages, hero, women, servants, low types), so the rule that follows overrides all of those fixed assignmentsसब पात्रों के विषय में — पूर्व कारिकाओं में गिनाए गए सभी वक्ताओं (देवता, ऋषि, नायक, स्त्रियाँ, सेवक, नीच जन) के लिए
kāraṇa-vaśātwhen there is a cause for it (kāraṇa = a warranting reason; vaśāt = under the force of) ablative of cause — "by force of a cause"; the switch is licensed only when a reason compels it, never at whimकिसी कारण के वश से — जब कोई हेतु विवश करे तभी, मनमाने ढंग से नहीं
kāryaḥis to be made / should be effected gerundive (kṛtya), agreeing with vyatikramaḥ — states the rule as a prescription: this is the correct dramaturgical practiceकरना चाहिए — यही उचित नाट्य-विधि है, ऐसा विधान
bhāṣā-vyatikramaḥa crossing-over of the assigned language — a character speaking other than the tongue his class was given (bhāṣā = the fixed stage-speech; vyatikrama = stepping across, deviation) nominative subject; vyatikrama is "transgression" in the neutral sense of switching, not a faultभाषा का व्यतिक्रम — नियत भाषा को छोड़कर दूसरी भाषा में बोलना (यहाँ व्यतिक्रम दोष नहीं, केवल परिवर्तन)
sarveṣāṁ — for all the characters; kāraṇa-vaśāt — when a cause compels it; bhāṣā-vyatikramaḥ — a crossing-over of the assigned language; kāryaḥ — is to be made.
The last several kārikās fixed who speaks what on stage: Sanskrit for the gods, sages, and hero; specific Prakrit dialects for women, servants, and low characters. Now Rūpa allows an exception. For any character at all, the assigned language may be switched — a high character dropping into Prakrit, or a low one rising into Sanskrit. But only kāraṇa-vaśāt: when there is a real cause for it. The gerundive kāryaḥ makes this settled practice, not a lapse. What counts as such a cause is spelled out in the next line and the following kārikā.
bhāṣā-vyatikrama ("language-crossing") is a standard rule of Sanskrit dramaturgy, inherited from Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra: the language a character is normally given by rank (Sanskrit for the dignified, Prakrit for the rest) is not absolute — circumstances can override it. This kārikā states the permission and names two grounds (line 2); the next kārikā (nc.8.142) enumerates the remaining causes — disguise, agitation, reading aloud what is written, and quotation.

māhātmyasya paribhraṁśān madasyātiśayāt tathā ||
māhātmyasyaof one's greatness — the high standing that earned a character Sanskrit in the first place genitive dependent on paribhraṁśāt — "the falling-away of one's greatness"अपनी महानता का — जिस बड़प्पन या प्रतिष्ठा का पात्र धनी है, उसका
paribhraṁśātbecause that greatness has fallen away (pari-bhraṁśa = a slipping-down, loss of station) ablative of cause — the first ground for the switch: when a dignified character loses his standing (through misfortune, disguise, degradation), his Sanskrit gives way to Prakritगिर जाने के कारण — पहला हेतु; जब गौरवशाली पात्र अपनी प्रतिष्ठा से गिर जाता है (विपत्ति, छद्मवेश या पतन से), तब उसकी संस्कृत प्राकृत में बदल जाती है
madasyaof mada — intoxication, or the swelling rapture of pride or arousal genitive dependent on atiśayāt — "the excess of mada"; mada covers drink, pride, and passion alike, all states that unseat ordinary self-commandमद का — मद में मदिरा, गर्व और आवेग तीनों आते हैं, जो सामान्य आत्म-संयम को डिगा देते हैं
atiśayātbecause of an excess of it (atiśaya = overflowing surplus) ablative of cause — the second ground: mada carried to excess loosens the tongue, so a character may speak out of his assigned registerअधिकता के कारण — दूसरा हेतु; मद की अति जीभ को ढीला कर देती है, इसलिए पात्र अपनी नियत भाषा से बाहर बोल उठता है
tathālikewise / and so too — coupling this second cause to the first connective — "and in the same way"; ties madasya atiśayāt to māhātmyasya paribhraṁśāt as a parallel warrantतथा — और उसी प्रकार; मद की अधिकता को महानता के गिरने के समान ही हेतु के रूप में जोड़ता है
māhātmyasya paribhraṁśāt — because one's greatness has fallen away; tathā — and likewise; madasya atiśayāt — because of an excess of mada (intoxication or rapture).
Line 2 gives two of the causes that warrant the switch. First, māhātmyasya paribhraṁśāt: when a character's greatness falls away — a noble reduced by misfortune, disguise, or disgrace — the Sanskrit that suited his former station drops to Prakrit. Second, tathā, likewise, madasya atiśayāt: from an excess of mada — intoxication, or the swelling of pride or passion — a character's speech spills out of its assigned register. Both are ablatives of cause: not whim, but a real condition that unseats the ordinary rule. The remaining causes follow in the next kārikā.
sarveṣāṁ kāraṇa-vaśāt — māhātmyasya paribhraṁśāt madasya atiśayāt tathā — bhāṣā-vyatikramaḥ kāryaḥ.
For any character on stage, when a real cause compels it, the assigned stage-language may be crossed over — a high speaker dropping into Prakrit or a low one rising into Sanskrit: namely, when one's greatness has fallen away, and likewise from an excess of mada (intoxication, or the swelling of pride or passion).
A definitional kārikā: it states the rule of bhāṣā-vyatikrama (crossing the language fixed by rank) and names two of its warranting causes — loss of standing and excess of mada — with the remaining causes reserved for the next kārikā.
