saṁskṛtāSanskrit is the stage-speech [assigned to the classes now listed] nominative fem., picking up bhāṣā ("speech") from the lead-in; this is the saṁskṛtā side of the twofold splitसंस्कृत (भाषा) — प्रकरण के आरम्भ से 'भाषा' शब्द यहाँ जुड़ता है; यह भाषा के द्विविध विभाग का संस्कृत पक्ष है
devatādīnāṁbelongs to the gods and beings of their kind (devatā + ādi = the divine and semi-divine) genitive of possession — whose stage-speech it is; -ādi ("and the rest") stretches the class past the gods proper to comparable high beingsदेवता आदि की — किसकी रंगभाषा है, यह षष्ठी बताती है; 'आदि' शब्द वर्ग को केवल देवताओं तक न रखकर उन जैसे उच्च प्राणियों तक फैला देता है

saṁskṛtā [bhāṣā] — Sanskrit is the stage-speech; devatādīnāṁ — of the gods and their kind; munīnāṁ — of the sages; nāyakasya ca — and of the hero.
The lead-in split dramatic speech in two: saṁskṛtā (Sanskrit) and prākṛtī (Prakrit). Now Rūpa says who is given Sanskrit. On stage, Sanskrit goes in the mouths of the gods and beings like them, of the munis (the sages), and of the nāyaka — the hero of the play. These are the dignified, high-ranking characters, so the polished language is fitted to them.
A technical convention of Sanskrit drama, inherited from Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra: characters are assigned Sanskrit or Prakrit by rank and role. High male figures of standing — divine beings, ascetic sages, and the hero — speak Sanskrit; women and lower characters are given Prakrit (the prākṛtī side, treated in the next kārikā of this subsection). The -ādi in devatādi extends the class beyond the gods proper to include semi-divine beings of comparable dignity.
bhāṣā bhedataḥ saṁskṛtā prākṛtī ca iti dvidhā [bhavati]; [tatra] saṁskṛtā devatā-ādīnāṁ munīnāṁ nāyakasya ca [bhāṣā bhavati].
Dramatic speech is of two kinds by its division — saṁskṛtā (Sanskrit) and prākṛtī (Prakrit). Of these, Sanskrit is the stage-speech of the gods and beings of their kind, of the munis (the sages), and of the nāyaka — the hero of the play.
Defines the saṁskṛtā division of stage-speech, assigning Sanskrit to the high-ranking characters: the gods and their kind, the munis, and the nāyaka.
