asūcyaṁ tu dvidhā dṛśyaṁ śravyaṁ cādyaṁ tu darśayet |
asūcyaṁthe asūcya — matter that must be presented, not merely reported off-stage neuter nominative, the subject carried over from v110; asūcya = what is NOT sūcya, i.e. too rasa-laden to be relegated to a hint, so it has to be brought before the audience directlyजो असूच्य है वह — अर्थात् जिसे केवल सूचना-मात्र से नहीं जताया जा सकता (यह कर्ता पूर्व-कारिका से चला आ रहा है)
tunow, turning to how it is presented continuative tu, marking the move from what asūcya IS (v110) to sorting the ways it is put before the audienceअब (यह बताने के लिए कि उसे किस प्रकार प्रस्तुत करें)
dvidhāis of two kindsदो प्रकार का होता है
dṛśyaṁthe dṛśya — the visible, what is put across by being shownदृश्य — जो देखने योग्य है
śravyaṁ caand the śravya — the audible, what is put across by being heard ca 'and' joins the second kind; the pair dṛśya/śravya exhausts the asūcyaऔर श्रव्य — जो सुनने योग्य है ('च' दूसरे भेद को जोड़ता है, और यह जोड़ी असूच्य को पूरा कर देती है)
ādyaṁthe first of the two, the dṛśya neuter accusative, object of darśayet — 'the first' = dṛśya, named in source orderइनमें पहला, अर्थात् दृश्य (दर्शयेत् का कर्म)
tuthis one, by contrast, second tu, adversative — the first kind is handled by showing, which already implies the second (L2) is handled by hearingपरन्तु (पहले भेद का विधान — इससे यह भी सूचित होता है कि दूसरे का विधान सुनाने से होगा)
darśayetone should present by enacting it in full view optative causative of √dṛś, 'cause to be seen' — the prescription for the dṛśya kindदिखाना चाहिए — रंगमंच पर साक्षात् प्रस्तुत करे (√दृश् का प्रेरणार्थक विधिलिङ्)
asūcyaṁ tu — now the asūcya; dvidhā — is of two kinds; dṛśyaṁ śravyaṁ ca — the visible and the audible; ādyaṁ tu — the first of these, the dṛśya; darśayet — one should present by showing it on stage.
Rūpa now sorts the asūcya — the grand, rasa-filled matter that (from v110) must be staged directly rather than left to an off-stage hint. It splits two ways: the dṛśya, 'the visible', and the śravya, 'the audible'. Take the first of the two, the dṛśya. It is handled by showing — you enact it right in front of the audience, so the eye carries it. The little word tu ('by contrast') is already looking ahead: since the first kind is put across by being seen, the second kind must be put across by being heard — and that is what L2 takes up.
This kārikā sub-divides the asūcya defined in v110 (ref 208), the matter so full of splendour, rasa and bhāva that it cannot be merely intimated but must be presented. The split is by the sense that receives it. dṛśya, 'to be seen', is enacted action that the audience watches happen — a meeting, a fight, a dance; śravya, 'to be heard', is matter whose force lands through speech in the ear. The distinction is like a duel staged before you (dṛśya) versus a secret plan a character breathes aside or a herald's proclamation cried aloud (śravya): one is carried by what you see, the other by what you hear. L1 disposes of the first kind — show it; L2 turns to the second and divides it further.

prakāśaṁ caand prakāśa — open speech, said aloud for all to hear ca 'and' joins the second member of the pairऔर प्रकाश — प्रकट रूप से सबके सामने कहा गया ('च' जोड़ी के दूसरे सदस्य को जोड़ता है)
itinamely — closing off the two-item list iti marks the end of the enumeration svagata/prakāśaइस प्रकार (स्वगत और प्रकाश की गणना यहीं समाप्त)
bhedataḥby way of this division ablative adverb of manner — 'as split into these kinds'इन भेदों के अनुसार
dvitīyaṁ — the second kind, the śravya; dvedhā — is twofold; svagataṁ prakāśaṁ ca iti bhedataḥ — namely, by the division into svagata and prakāśa.
Now the second kind, the śravya or 'audible', divides in two. First, svagata — speech a character says to himself, the aside that only he (and the listening audience) is meant to catch. Second, prakāśa — open speech, spoken aloud for everyone on stage to hear. Between them these two cover all of the audible. v112 will pick up each in turn: what makes a line svagata, and how prakāśa itself splits further.
svagata and prakāśa are standard modes of stage utterance in Sanskrit dramaturgy (the fuller lists add janāntika, a confidential aside to one character, and apavārita, speech screened from some on stage); Rūpa here draws only the basic two-way cut of the śravya. svagata, 'gone into oneself', is heard by the speaker alone; prakāśa, 'made manifest', is heard by all. v112 (ref 210) defines svagata as sva-eka-vijñeya, 'known to oneself alone', and then splits prakāśa again into sarva-prakāśa (open to everyone) and niyata-prakāśa (open to a set party).
asūcyaṁ tu dvidhā — dṛśyaṁ śravyaṁ ca; ādyaṁ tu darśayet; dvitīyaṁ dvedhā — svagataṁ prakāśaṁ ca iti bhedataḥ.
The asūcya — the matter too full of rasa to be left to an off-stage hint — is of two kinds: the dṛśya, 'the visible', and the śravya, 'the audible'. The first of these, the dṛśya, one should present by enacting it in full view of the audience, so the eye carries it (which already implies the second is carried by the ear). The second kind, the śravya, is itself twofold, split into svagata — speech a character says to himself, the aside — and prakāśa — open speech, spoken aloud for all to hear.
Defining kārikā: sub-divides the asūcya (from v110) into dṛśya and śravya by the sense that receives it, prescribes showing for the dṛśya, and further splits the śravya into svagata and prakāśa.
