ādāv eva tadāṅkaḥ syād āmukhākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
yadā tu sarasaṁ vastu mūlād eva pravartate |
yadāwhen [this next case holds] — correlative adverb; tadā in L2 answers it, 'then it is…'
tubut — turning to the opposite case from the last kārikā contrastive; sets sarasa here against the nīrasaṁ sūcyam of v108परन्तु — यहाँ के सरस विषय को पूर्ववर्ती नीरस (सूच्य) विषय के विरुद्ध खड़ा करता है
sarasaṁ vastua rasa-laden matter — plot-material charged with rasa (sa-rasa) nom. neut., subject; sa-rasa is the deliberate opposite of nīrasa 'flat, rasa-less' in v108रस से युक्त विषय-वस्तु (कर्ता); यह 'सरस' शब्द जान-बूझकर 'नीरस' (रस से रहित, फीका) का उलटा रखा गया है
mūlāt evastraight from the main plot itself (mūla) — the root story, not a mere off-stage report abl. of source; eva 'itself, precisely' stresses that the matter comes directly from the root, not through an interludeमूल कथानक से ही — 'एव' से यह दृढ़ किया गया है कि वह वस्तु सीधे मूल से आती है, किसी बीच के प्रसंग के द्वारा नहीं
pravartatesets forth, unfolds directly [on stage] pres. 3 sg.; the matter is carried forward, not merely suggested (sūcya)प्रवृत्त होती है, चलती है — अर्थात् वह वस्तु आगे बढ़ाई जाती है, केवल संकेत (सूच्य) रूप में नहीं दिखाई जाती
yadā tu — but when; sarasaṁ vastu — a rasa-laden matter; mūlāt eva — straight from the main plot itself; pravartate — unfolds directly.
In the last kārikā (v108) Rūpa took the case where the matter to be shown is nīrasa — flat, without rasa — right after the prologue: there it is only reported through a viṣkambha or an aṅkāsyaka, one of the introductory interludes. Now he turns to the opposite case — that is the force of 'tu', 'but'. Here the matter is sarasa, charged with rasa, and it comes straight from the mūla, the main plot itself. It is not merely hinted at from off stage; it unfolds directly. L2 will say what such matter is called.
This is a technical distinction between an arthopakṣepaka (an introductory device that reports matter from off stage) and a full aṅka (an act enacted on stage), and it turns on rasa. Compare v108 (ref 206): when the matter after the āmukha is nīrasa and only to be suggested (sūcya), it is handled by a viṣkambha or aṅkāsyaka. This kārikā takes the reverse: when the matter is sarasa and springs from the mūla, the root plot, it is enacted directly rather than reported. The gauge is homely — a rasa-charged, plot-central event is played out before us (an aṅka); a flat, incidental event is merely narrated through an interlude.
L2definition
ādāv eva tadāṅkaḥ syād āmukhākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ ||
ādau evaat the very outset — right at the start [of the play] loc. of time; eva 'very' pins it to the opening, answering the ādāv/mukha placement discussed since v108आरम्भ में ही — 'एव' इसे नाटक के प्रारम्भ में ही जड़ देता है, जो v108 से चली आ रही आदि/मुख स्थान की चर्चा का उत्तर है
tadāthen, in that case correlative answering yadā (L1)तब — यह 'यदा' (L1) का उत्तर देने वाला नित्य-सम्बन्धी शब्द है
aṅkaḥ[it] is an aṅka — a full act, enacted on stage, not an introductory interlude nom. masc., predicate; the term being defined, set against viṣkambha/aṅkāsyaka of v108अङ्क (विधेय) — यही वह पद है जिसकी परिभाषा दी जा रही है, और जो v108 के विष्कम्भ/अङ्कास्यक के विरुद्ध रखा गया है
syātshould be, is to be reckoned opt. 3 sg., laying down the ruleहोता है — विधिलिङ् के द्वारा नियम स्थापित करता है
āmukha-ākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥresting on the setup given by the āmukha — it leans on the ākṣepa (the casting-in of characters and matter) already made by the prologue bahuvrīhi, nom. masc. agreeing with aṅkaḥ; āmukha = prastāvanā, the prologue; ākṣepa = its 'throwing-in' of characters/matter; saṁśraya = 'having as its support'.
tadā — then; ādau eva — at the very outset; aṅkaḥ syāt — it is to be an aṅka; āmukha-ākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ — one resting on the setup made by the prologue.
Then, right at the outset, such matter is to be reckoned an aṅka — a full act played out on stage, not a mere introductory interlude like the viṣkambha or aṅkāsyaka. But even this opening act does not stand on its own: it rests on the āmukha, the prologue. It leans on the ākṣepa — the casting-in of the characters and the matter that the prologue has already supplied. So the aṅka begins directly and enacts the rasa-laden plot, yet the prologue has still set its stage.
āmukha is the prastāvanā, the prologue of a play; ākṣepa is its work of 'throwing in' — introducing the characters and the thread of the matter; saṁśraya means the aṅka takes this as its support. The point rounds off the contrast with v108: there the interlude had its characters cast by the prologue (āmukhākṣipta-pātrakam); here the opening aṅka likewise depends on the prologue's setup (āmukhākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ), the difference being that the rasa-laden matter is now enacted as a proper act rather than merely reported.
yadā tu sarasaṁ vastu mūlāt eva pravartate, tadā ādau eva āmukha-ākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ aṅkaḥ syāt.
yadā tu सरस vastu mūlāt eva pravartate, tadā ādau eva āmukha-ākṣepa-saṁśrayaḥ aṅkaḥ syāt।
But when the matter to be shown is rasa-laden and springs straight from the main plot itself, then, right at the outset, it should be reckoned an aṅka — a full act enacted on stage that rests on the setup already made by the āmukha, the prologue.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the aṅka: contrasting the nīrasa case of v108, he lays down that rasa-laden plot-material drawn from the mūla is enacted directly as an act, leaning on the prologue's ākṣepa.
