Rūpa now takes up a special case. Sometimes the thing that has to be conveyed just after the āmukha — the prologue that opens the play — is a matter only to be hinted at (sūcya), not acted out on stage, and it carries no rasa of its own (nīrasa). The rule is a conditional: 'When, right after the prologue, there is such a flavorless matter that must merely be indicated, then …' — and the sentence is completed in the next line.
āmukha is the prastāvanā, the prologue in which the sūtradhāra (stage-manager) opens the performance; anantaram fixes the timing — the device defined here falls immediately after it. sūcya, 'to be hinted,' marks content that the play only points to rather than dramatizes; nīrasa, 'without rasa,' marks content that would not reward being staged for its own flavor. Both conditions together are what call for a viṣkambha or aṅkāsya (L2) instead of a full act. This pairs with 8.109, where the opposite case — a sarasa, rasa-full matter arising from the root story — is presented directly as the aṅka itself.
'आमुख' वही प्रस्तावना है जिसमें सूत्रधार (रंगमंच का संचालक) नाटक का आरम्भ करता है; और 'अनन्तर' शब्द समय को निश्चित करता है — यहाँ परिभाषित युक्ति उसी के तुरन्त बाद आती है। 'सूच्य' वह विषय है जिसे नाटक केवल संकेत करता है, अभिनीत नहीं करता; और 'नीरस' वह है जिसे उसके अपने रस के लिए मंच पर दिखाने से कोई लाभ न हो। ये दोनों स्थितियाँ मिलकर ही पूर्ण अङ्क के स्थान पर विष्कम्भ अथवा अङ्कास्य (पंक्ति २) की माँग करती हैं। यह ८.१०९ के साथ जोड़ी बनाता है, जहाँ इसका उलटा प्रसंग है — मूल कथा से उठा सरस अर्थात् रस-पूर्ण विषय स्वयं अङ्क के रूप में सीधे प्रस्तुत किया जाता है।

viṣkambho’ṅkāsyakaṁ vā syād āmukhākṣipta-pātrakam ||
viṣkambhaḥit is a viṣkambha — the interlude that reports, in brief, matter not shown on stage nom. sg. masc., first of the two named devices; predicate of syātविष्कम्भ — दोनों नामित युक्तियों में पहली; 'स्यात्' का विधेय
aṅkāsyakamor an aṅkāsya, the 'mouth of the act' (aṅka-āsya) — the device that ushers in what the coming act will carry nom. sg. neut., the second device; aṅka, 'act,' + āsya, 'mouth, face'अङ्कास्य — दूसरी युक्ति; अङ्क + आस्य (मुख), अर्थात् अङ्क का मुख
vāor — the two are offered as alternatives, either serving for this case disjunctive particle linking viṣkambha and aṅkāsyaअथवा — विकल्प बताने वाला शब्द, जो विष्कम्भ और अङ्कास्य को जोड़ता है
syātis what results 3 sg. opt.; carries over the correlative tadā of L1 — 'then it is …'
āmukhākṣipta-pātrakamone whose characters have been drawn in from the āmukha — the persons are those the prologue already brought on, not fresh ones bahuvrīhi, nom. sg. neut. (agreeing by proximity with aṅkāsyakam but qualifying the whole disjunct); āmukha-ākṣipta, 'introduced by / carried over from the prologue,' + pātraka, 'the characters'जिसके पात्र आमुख से ही लिए गए हों — बहुव्रीहि; आमुख-आक्षिप्त अर्थात् प्रस्तावना से लाए गए, और पात्रक अर्थात् पात्र
tadā [from L1] — then; viṣkambhaḥ aṅkāsyakam vā syāt — it is a viṣkambha or an aṅkāsya; āmukhākṣipta-pātrakam — one whose characters are carried over from the prologue.
The rule now finishes. In that case the device is either a viṣkambha or an aṅkāsya. The viṣkambha is the interlude that reports off-stage events in brief; the aṅkāsya, the 'mouth of the act,' is the device that ushers in what the coming act will bring. Either one serves. And in this case its persons are not new: the characters (pātraka) are the very ones already drawn in by the āmukha, the prologue. So flavorless, hint-only matter right after the prologue is handled by a viṣkambha or aṅkāsya staffed with the prologue's own people — whereas a rasa-full matter (8.109) is staged directly as the act.
viṣkambhaka and aṅkāsya (= aṅkamukha) are two of the arthopakṣepakas, the auxiliary 'introducing' devices of Sanskrit dramaturgy that convey what is not shown on stage: the viṣkambha compresses and reports intervening or off-stage events, while the aṅkāsya/aṅkamukha opens onto the matter of the act to come. The point of this kārikā is when to use them — for nīrasa, sūcya content following the prologue — and the qualifier āmukhākṣipta-pātraka specifies that here their cast is carried over from the āmukha rather than freshly introduced.
yadā āmukha-anantaram nīrasam sūcyam syāt, tadā āmukha-ākṣipta-pātrakam viṣkambhaḥ aṅkāsyakam vā syāt.
yadā आमुख-अनन्तरम् nīrasaṁ sūcyaṁ (वस्तु) syāt, tadā (तत्) āmukhākṣipta-pātrakaṁ viṣkambhaḥ aṅkāsyakaṁ vā syāt।
When, right after the āmukha (the opening prologue), the matter to be conveyed is flavorless — carrying no rasa of its own — and is only to be hinted at rather than staged in full, then that matter is handled by a viṣkambha or else by an aṅkāsya (the 'mouth of the act'), whose characters are not freshly introduced but are the very persons already drawn in by the prologue.
A definition-kārikā fixing when the arthopakṣepaka devices viṣkambha and aṅkāsya are employed — for nīrasa, sūcya matter following the prologue, staffed with the āmukha's own cast; it pairs by contrast with 8.109, where rasa-full matter is staged directly as the aṅka.
