aṅkāvatāraḥ pātrāṇāṁ pūrvāṅkārthānuvartinām |
aṅkāvatāraḥthe aṅkāvatāra — the 'act-descent,' the device now being defined nom. sg., the subject of the definition; it is equated with praveśanam 'the entering' in L2. aṅka 'act' + avatāra 'a coming-down, carry-over'अङ्कावतार (अङ्क का अवतरण) — यही परिभाषित किया जाने वाला विशेष्य है
pātrāṇāmof the characters — whose entering is at issue gen. pl.; picked up again by sarveṣām 'all of them' in L2, and it is their praveśana (entering) that the verse definesपात्रों का — जिनका (आगे कहा जाने वाला) प्रवेश यहाँ लक्षित हो रहा है
pūrvāṅka-artha-anuvartināmwho carry on the matter of the previous act — the same business runs straight through, uninterrupted gen. pl., describing pātrāṇām; pūrvāṅka 'the earlier act' + artha 'its matter, business' + anuvartin 'following on, continuing'जो पूर्व अङ्क के विषय (कार्य-प्रयोजन) का अनुसरण करते हैं, उन (पात्रों) का
aṅkāvatāraḥ — the aṅkāvatāra is; pātrāṇām pūrvāṅka-artha-anuvartinām — of the characters who carry on the matter of the previous act; [praveśanam — their entering (completed in L2)].
Rūpa now defines a link-device called the aṅkāvatāra, the 'act-descent.' It concerns the characters — and specifically those characters who carry on the very business of the act just ended. The same matter keeps running; nothing is dropped or restarted. The line names whose entrance is meant; the next line says what the device actually is.
aṅkāvatāra is one of the arthopakṣepakas, the connective devices that bridge two acts of a play — grouped here with aṅkāsya (8.104) just before and praveśaka (8.107) just after. Literally 'the descent (avatāra) of an act (aṅka)': the action of one act climbs down directly into the next.

avibhāgena sarveṣāṁ bhāviny aṅke praveśanam ||
avibhāgenawithout a break — seamlessly, with no dividing interval between the acts instr. sg. of manner, telling HOW the entering happens; a-vibhāga 'non-division, no separation' — this is the mark that sets aṅkāvatāra apart, the acts join with no gapबिना किसी विभाग (व्यवधान) के — इसी रीति से प्रवेश होता है; यही वह लक्षण है जो अङ्कावतार को अलग करता है, दोनों अङ्क बिना अन्तराल के जुड़ जाते हैं
sarveṣāmof them all — every one of those carry-over characters, not just some gen. pl., completing pātrāṇām of L1; the totality matters — the whole cast of the prior act moves onसब (पात्रों) का — पूर्व अङ्क के समस्त पात्र आगे बढ़ते हैं; यही 'पात्रों का' पद को पूरा करता है
bhāvini aṅkeinto the act about to come — the next act, still to unfold loc. sg., naming the destination of the entering; bhāvin 'that which is going to be, forthcoming' + aṅka 'act'होने वाले (आगामी) अङ्क में — प्रवेश का गन्तव्य यही है
praveśanamis their entering — the entrance itself, which is what the aṅkāvatāra IS nom. sg., the predicate that defines aṅkāvatāraḥ of L1; pra-√viś 'to enter' — the act of going on stageप्रवेश करना (रंगमञ्च पर चढ़ना) — यही वह विधेय है जो पहली पंक्ति के अङ्कावतार को परिभाषित करता है
sarveṣām [pātrāṇām] — of all those characters; bhāvini aṅke — into the act about to come; avibhāgena praveśanam — their entering without any break [is the aṅkāvatāra].
Here is the heart of it. When all of those characters — the whole cast carrying the previous act's business — walk straight into the next act with no break in between, that seamless entrance is the aṅkāvatāra. The key word is avibhāgena, 'without a division': there is no interval, no fresh start. One act simply descends into the next through the continuous entrance of its own characters.
pūrvāṅka-artha-anuvartinām sarveṣām pātrāṇām avibhāgena bhāvini aṅke praveśanam aṅkāvatāraḥ
pūrvāṅka-artha-anuvartinām sarveṣām pātrāṇām avibhāgena bhāvini aṅke praveśanam (yaḥ saḥ) aṅkāvatāraḥ।
When the whole cast of characters who carry on the very business of the act just ended enters the act about to come with no break in between, that seamless entrance is called the aṅkāvatāra, the 'act-descent.'
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the aṅkāvatāra, one of the arthopakṣepakas that bridge two acts: it is marked off by avibhāgena, the carry-over characters passing into the next act without any dividing interval.
