L1definition
bahūni kāraṇāny eva sā mālety abhidhīyate ||
bahūnimany, numerous — more than one neuter plural, agreeing with kāraṇāniअनेक (बहुत-से) — कारणों की संख्या की बहुलता ही यहाँ लक्षण का मर्म है
kāraṇānimotives, purposes, reasons — when a single speech sets out several of them at once kāraṇa 'a motive, a ground'; the plurality here is the whole point of the definitionकारण (हेतु, प्रयोजन); और यह बहुवचन ही परिभाषा का सारा तात्पर्य है
evaprecisely this — it is the very plurality of motives that earns the name emphatic; fixes the defining feature (many, not one) as decisiveही (निश्चय ही) — 'बहुत, एक नहीं' इस लक्षण को निर्णायक रूप से स्थिर करता है
sāthat [speech, that utterance] feminine 'that', pointing back to the utterance named in the first half of the definition, which is not carried in this lineवह (स्त्रीलिंग उक्ति) — परिभाषा के पूर्वार्ध में कही गई वाणी की ओर संकेत, जो इस चरण में नहीं आई
mālā itias mālā, 'a garland, a string' — the sandhy-aṅga being named iti marks the technical term being assigned'माला' इस नाम से — इति यहाँ नियत की जा रही संज्ञा को चिह्नित करता है
abhidhīyateis called, is named passive — the standard definitional 'is termed'कही जाती है — कर्मवाच्य, परिभाषा का प्रसिद्ध 'यह नाम दिया जाता है'
sā — that speech; bahūni kāraṇāni eva — [one that sets out] precisely many motives; mālā iti abhidhīyate — is called mālā, 'a garland.'
Here is the definition of mālā. Take a single speech that lays out not one reason but many — several motives strung together one after another. Precisely that — an utterance carrying many motives at once — is what gets the name mālā, which means 'a garland' or 'a string.' The name fits the thing: just as a garland threads many flowers onto one string, this limb threads many purposes into one speech. The word sā, 'that,' points back to the utterance named in the first half of the definition, which this single line does not carry.
mālā ('a garland, a string') is one of the sandhy-aṅgas — the small structural limbs that build up a play's junctures — and Rūpa gives its lakṣaṇa here. It is named for the image: a speech that strings together many motives at once, as a garland strings many flowers on one thread. The lead-in standing above this verse — the jaṭilā/abhimanyu exchange closing atra ... jaṭilāyāḥ sva-putre kṛṣṇa-buddhi-kathanāt sārūpyam, 'here, from jaṭilā's taking her own son for Kṛṣṇa, it is sārūpya' — is the closing comment on the preceding aṅga, sārūpya ('a look-alike confusion'); the mālā topic opens fresh with this defining line.
sā [uktiḥ, yasyām] bahūni kāraṇāni eva [santi], [sā] mālā iti abhidhīyate ||
That single speech which sets out not one motive but many at once — several purposes strung together one after another — is called mālā, 'a garland.'
The lakṣaṇa (defining line) of the sandhy-aṅga mālā: a speech that gathers many motives at once earns the name 'garland,' as one thread strings many flowers; the sā points back to the utterance named in the definition's first half, and the jaṭilā–abhimanyu passage in the lead-in closes the preceding aṅga (sārūpya) before this topic opens.
