L1definition
kṣobhas tv anya-gate hetāv anyasmin kārya-kalpanaṁ ||
kṣobhaḥkṣobha — a 'stirring-up', an agitation; the device now being definedक्षोभ (नामक सन्ध्यङ्ग) का लक्षण यह है —
tunow, as for — marks this off from the aṅga just defined tu, contrastive: turns to a new item in the listपरन्तु (अभी-अभी कहे गए अङ्ग से इसे अलग करते हुए)
anya-gate hetauwhen the cause has gone elsewhere — the trigger (hetu) is aimed at one thing locative absolute (anya-gate hetau): sets the 'when' conditionजब हेतु (कारण) किसी और की ओर लक्षित हो
anyasminregarding some other thing — not the thing the cause pointed at locative: where the imagined effect is placedतब किसी अन्य में
kārya-kalpanamis the supposing of an effect — positing that a result falls there; kārya is the effect, kalpanā the imagining of itकार्य की कल्पना कर लेना
kṣobhaḥ tu — now kṣobha; anya-gate hetau — when the cause is aimed at one thing; anyasmin — on another thing; kārya-kalpanam — is the supposing of an effect.
Now kṣobha, a 'stirring-up'. The cause, the trigger, is aimed at one thing. But an effect is then supposed on a different thing. In short: the cause points one way, and the mind reads its result somewhere else.
This kārikā is the lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of kṣobha, a sandhy-aṅga — one of the limbs of a dramatic juncture. The particle tu sets it off from the aṅga defined just before. In the lead-in illustration, Paurṇamāsī's remark that Fate has left only Candrāvalī works this way: Kṛṣṇa's real hint is aimed elsewhere (toward the other gopīs), while an effect is read onto Candrāvalī.
hetau anya-gate (sati) anyasmin kārya-kalpanam tu kṣobhaḥ
hetau anya-gate (सति) anyasmin kārya-kalpanam tu kṣobhaḥ (इति लक्षणम्)।
When the cause is aimed at one thing, but an effect is then supposed to fall on another thing, that is kṣobha, a 'stirring-up'.
The lakṣaṇa (defining kārikā) of kṣobha, a sandhy-aṅga — the limb in which a trigger pointed one way has its result read onto something else.
