L1definition
patanāt prakṛtād arthād anyasmin bhraṁśa īritaḥ ||
patanātbecause of the slipping, the falling-off ablative of cause — this is the reason the limb earns its name bhraṁśa ('a slip'); patana literally 'a falling'गिर पड़ने के कारण (पतन = 'गिरना'; इसी गिरने के कारण इस अंग का नाम भ्रंश पड़ता है)
prakṛtād arthātaway from the matter at hand, from the topic under way ablative of source — prakṛta 'what is being dealt with' + artha 'topic'; this is what one falls away fromजो प्रसंग चल रहा है उस विषय से (प्रकृत = 'जो चल रहा हो' + अर्थ = 'विषय'; यही वह है जिससे गिरना होता है)
anyasminonto another [matter], into something else locative — where the slip lands; the fall is onto a topic other than the one in handकिसी दूसरे विषय में (जहाँ जाकर गिरना ठहरता है; प्रस्तुत विषय को छोड़कर अन्य विषय पर)
bhraṁśaḥ[is] bhraṁśa (a lapse, a slipping-off) — the sandhy-aṅga being defined nominative, the term namedभ्रंश (यही वह संज्ञा है जिसका लक्षण किया जा रहा है)
īritaḥis declared, is so called past passive participle — the definitional 'is stated to be'कहा गया है (लक्षण-वचन का 'कहा जाता है')
prakṛtād arthāt anyasmin patanāt — because of slipping away from the matter at hand onto another; bhraṁśaḥ īritaḥ — it is declared to be bhraṁśa.
Here is the definition. The scene is moving along one matter — the topic under way. Then it slips off, and drops onto some other matter instead. That falling-away from the matter at hand onto another is what is called bhraṁśa, 'a lapse.' The word bhraṁśa itself means a slip or a fall, and that is exactly what this limb names: the thread of the scene dropping off its track onto something else.
bhraṁśa ('a slip, a falling-off') is one of the sandhy-aṅgas — the small structural limbs that build up the junctures (sandhi) of a play. Rūpa gives its lakṣaṇa here in his own defining kārikā (origin: original). The lead-in standing above this verse — atra kṛṣṇena candrāvalī-prārthanam anunayaḥ, 'here Kṛṣṇa's entreaty to Candrāvalī is anunaya' — is the closing comment on the preceding aṅga, anunaya ('conciliation'); the bhraṁśa topic opens fresh with this verse.
prakṛtāt arthāt anyasmin patanāt bhraṁśaḥ īritaḥ
prakṛtād arthāt anyasmin patanāt (yaḥ) bhraṁśaḥ (saḥ) īritaḥ।
When the scene, moving along on the matter at hand, slips off its track and drops onto some other matter instead — that falling-away from the topic under way onto another is what is declared to be bhraṁśa, 'a lapse.'
Rūpa's own defining kārikā (lakṣaṇa) of the sandhy-aṅga bhraṁśa — a slip from the topic in hand onto another.
