nītas tanvi mukhena te paribhavaṁ bhrū-kṣepaivikrīḍayā
nītaḥwas brought, was led [to] past participle, nominative sg. masc.; it agrees with the moon (candraḥ), whose name the verse withholds until L4 — so the whole sentence hangs on this one participleपहुँचा दिया गया (यह भूतकालिक कृदन्त उस चन्द्रमा का विशेषण है, जिसका नाम L4 तक छिपा रहता है — सारा वाक्य इसी एक पद पर टिका है)
mukhena teby your face instrumental of means + genitive; your face is the agent that defeats the moonतेरे मुख के द्वारा (यही मुख चन्द्रमा को हराने वाला कर्ता है)
paribhavamto utter defeat, to humiliation accusative, the goal of nītaḥ — 'brought to defeat'पराभव को (अर्थात् हार तक; यही 'नीतः' का लक्ष्य है)
bhrū-kṣepair vikrīḍayāthrough the sportive play of your arching brows two instrumentals — bhrū-kṣepaiḥ 'by castings of the brows' + vikrīḍayā 'in play'; the source prints them run together (bhrū-kṣepaivikrīḍayā). The brow-play is the weapon by which the face conquers the moonभ्रू-विक्षेपों की क्रीड़ा के द्वारा (दो तृतीयाएँ — भ्रू-क्षेपैः 'भौंहों के संचालन से' और विक्रीडया 'लीलापूर्वक'; यही वह शस्त्र है जिससे मुख चन्द्रमा को जीतता है)
tanvi — O slender one; ayaṁ candraḥ (held back to L4) — this moon; te mukhena — by your face; bhrū-kṣepair vikrīḍayā — through the sportive play of your arching brows; paribhavaṁ nītaḥ — was brought to utter defeat
O slender one — so Kṛṣṇa says, coming up to Candrāvalī. Your face, with the teasing play of its arching eyebrows, brought the moon to utter defeat. The 'moon' is the subject the verse keeps hidden until its very last line.
An udāharaṇa of nirukta, the alaṅkāra just defined in kārikā 172 (nc.8.60): niruktaṁ niravadyoktir nāmāny artha-prasiddhaye — 'nirukta is a faultless utterance that explains a name so as to bring out its meaning.' Here Kṛṣṇa, joyfully coming up to Candrāvalī (candrāvalīm āsādya sānandam), spins a fanciful etymology of her own name: Candrāvalī = candra + āvalī, 'a row of moons.' Quoted from the first act of the play (1.40).

adhairyaṁ gataḥit lost its nerve, fell to trembling literally 'went to un-steadiness'; the moon finds no calm even in hiding — it shakes (twinkles, wanes)अधैर्य को प्राप्त हुआ (छिपकर भी उसे धैर्य नहीं मिला — वह काँपता, टिमटिमाता, घटता रहा)
bibhyat — in fear; viṣṇu-padaṁ śaraṇaṁ jagāma — [the moon] went to the sky for refuge; tatra api — yet even there; adhairyaṁ gataḥ — it lost its steadiness

Terrified, the moon fled for shelter to the sky, Viṣṇu's own realm. But even there it found no calm — it fell to trembling.

asya vijayinaḥ sevārtham — in order to serve this victorious [face]; dvija-rājitām āsādya — having come up to your gleaming row of teeth; ujjvalat- (candraḥ, L4) — this blazing [moon]
So, to serve that victorious face, the moon came right up to your row of teeth — teeth that gleam like a rank of tiny moons. And this blazing moon —
dvija-rāja is the pun the whole nirukta turns on: dvija, 'the twice-born,' means a star, a brahmin, and a tooth. The moon is the dvija-rāja, 'king of the twice-born stars' — but coming to serve her face it enters her dvija-rājitā, the 'row of teeth,' each tooth a small moon. So the one defeated moon is about to become, among her teeth, a whole row of moons.

dvija-rāja-tā-padamthe rank of being king of the twice-born — here, chief among your moon-white teeth accusative goal of agāt; padam 'position, station.' A second reading hovers — dvija-rāja-tāpa-dam, 'dealer of torment to the moon/teeth' — but the naming sense governsद्विज-राजता की पदवी को (पदम् = स्थान, पद; अर्थात् दाँतों की पंक्ति में एक चन्द्र होने की स्थिति को)।
agātwent to, attained aorist of gamप्राप्त हुआ (गम् का अद्यतन/लुङ् रूप)
tenaand for just that reason instrumental of cause — because the one moon has become a row of moons among your teeth; this 'therefore' is the signature move of the nirukta figureइसीलिए (कारण की तृतीया — क्योंकि वह एक चन्द्रमा तेरे दाँतों के बीच चन्द्रों की पंक्ति बन गया; यह 'इसलिए' ही निरुक्त अलंकार की पहचान है)
asi candrāvalīyou are Candrāvalī — 'she who wears a row of moons' the name resolved: candra + āvalī, 'a row of moons'तू चन्द्रावली है (नाम की व्युत्पत्ति खुल गई — चन्द्र + आवली, अर्थात् 'चन्द्रों की पंक्ति')
ayaṁ ujjvalat-candraḥ — this blazing moon; dvija-rāja-tā-padam agāt — attained the rank of chief among the twice-born (your moon-white teeth); tena — for that very reason; candrāvalī asi — you are Candrāvalī, 'she of the row of moons'
— this blazing moon took its place as the foremost among your moon-white teeth. And for exactly that reason you are Candrāvalī, 'she who wears a row of moons.' So Kṛṣṇa reads her name straight out of her smile: the single moon he defeated now shines, multiplied, as the row of her teeth. This unfolding of a name to yield its meaning is precisely the nirukta being illustrated.
The nirukta lands here: candra + āvalī, 'a row of moons,' is derived on the spot — the defeated moon, come to her teeth, becomes one of a whole row of little moons, so 'Candrāvalī' names the gleaming row of her teeth. tena, 'for that reason,' is the tell of the etymological figure: the name is offered as caused by the story just told, exactly what kārikā 172 (nc.8.60) prescribes — a faultless utterance explaining a name to establish its sense.
