śaraṇam iha yo bhrātus tasya pratīpa-vidhāyinā
śaraṇama refuge, the one you turn to for shelterशरण, आश्रय — जो सहारा था
ihahere, in this worldयहाँ, इस लोक में
yaḥhe who [is] — relative pronoun opening the first reversal; its correlative is the instrumental tena = pratīpa-vidhāyinā later in the lineजो (पुरुष) — यह सम्बन्धवाची सर्वनाम है, जिसका जोड़ आगे तृतीयान्त 'तेन' अर्थात् प्रतीप-विधायी से बैठता है
bhrātuḥfor [my] brother — [my] brother's [refuge] genitive sg. of bhrātṛ; the one shelteredभाई का — जिसका वह आश्रय था (षष्ठी)
tasyaadverse to him — [now with things going] against that very one objective genitive taken up by pratīpa 'contrary to'उसी (भाई) के प्रति — इसी को आगे 'प्रतीप' अर्थात् विरुद्ध पद ग्रहण करता है
pratīpa-vidhāyināby [the one] who works the very opposite — pratīpa 'contrary', vidhāyin 'the one bringing about' instrumental of the agent; this same contrary-doer is the agent of upekṣaṇam (L2) and vismṛtiḥ (L3); the word deliberately echoes hata-vidhi 'Fate' in L4विरुद्ध आचरण करने वाले के द्वारा — यही एक कर्ता आगे उपेक्षण और विस्मृति का भी कर्ता है, और यह शब्द चौथी पंक्ति के 'हत-विधि' से जान-बूझकर मेल खाता है
yaḥ iha bhrātuḥ śaraṇam [asti] — he who is here [my] brother's refuge; tasya pratīpa-vidhāyinā — [now] by [the one] making everything adverse to that very one.
See how it has all flipped. Here is the one who is a refuge for my brother — the shelter you run to. And that very shelter is now made to work against him. Grammatically this contrary-doer (pratīpa-vidhāyin) is the hidden agent behind the neglect and the forgetting the next lines will name.
An udāharaṇa of guṇātipāta, the sandhy-aṅga (a limb of the dramatic junctures) defined in the kārikā at 170 (nc.8.56): guṇātipāta = vyatyasta-guṇākhyāna, 'the statement of good qualities turned to their reverse.' The lead-in flags two senses. The previous illustration (170q1, nc.8.57) showed the first: praise worded as blame. This verse illustrates the second sense the lead-in quotes from the Sāhitya-darpaṇa (6.184) — 'guṇātipāta is when, in the outcome (kārye), things turn out contrary to the good qualities (yad viparītaṁ guṇān prati).' Here it is not words but events that reverse: every good has become its opposite. Quoted 'yathā pañcame candrāvalī (saṁskṛtena)' — as in the fifth act, spoken by Candrāvalī in Sanskrit (verse 5.25); the play is not named in the source.

hita-kṛd api tā devyās tasyāḥ samagram upekṣaṇam |
hita-kṛta doer of good, a benefactor — describing that same one nominative, in apposition to yaḥ (L1)हित करने वाला, उपकारी — यह प्रथमान्त पद पिछली पंक्ति के 'यः' का समानाधिकरण है
apithough — 'benefactor though he is', setting up the reversalयद्यपि, भी — 'उपकारी होते हुए भी'
tā devyāḥ tasyāḥof that very queen — the lady he should have helped genitive; the demonstratives (tā… tasyāḥ) doubled for emphasis, all pointing to devīउस देवी की — बल देने के लिए 'ता' और 'तस्याः' दोनों दर्शक पद दुहराए गए, दोनों देवी की ओर संकेत करते हैं (षष्ठी)
upekṣaṇam[there is now] a passing-over, an utter ignoring verbal noun; its agent is the pratīpa-vidhāyin of L1उपेक्षा, अनदेखी हुई — इसका कर्ता वही पहली पंक्ति का प्रतीप-विधायी है
hita-kṛt api — [he,] though a benefactor; tasyāḥ tā devyāḥ samagram upekṣaṇam — [there is now] a complete neglect of that very queen.
Though he is her benefactor — the one whose whole role is to do her good — that queen is now utterly overlooked. The good-doer has turned into the one who ignores her completely. That is the second reversal.
The syntax names the flip inside a single breath: hita-kṛt (benefactor) is set beside samagram upekṣaṇam (total neglect) — the quality and its opposite pinned together, which is exactly what guṇātipāta stages.

gatir avikalo yo me tasya priyasya ca vismṛtir
gatiḥthe recourse, the one place to turnगति, आश्रय, सहारा
avikalaḥunfailing, entire, never letting you down nominative, describing gatiḥअखण्ड, कभी न चूकने वाला — यह प्रथमान्त पद गति का वर्णन करता है
yaḥ mehe who [is] my [recourse] second relative clause; me is genitive 'my', correlative picked up by tasya belowजो मेरा (था) — यह दूसरा सम्बन्धवाची वाक्य है; 'मे' षष्ठी 'मेरा', जिसका जोड़ आगे 'तस्य' से बैठता है
tasya priyasyaof that beloved — that same dear one correlative to yaḥ me; the recourse and the beloved are one personउसी प्रिय की — यह 'यः मे' का प्रतिसम्बन्धी है; सहारा और प्रियतम एक ही व्यक्ति हैं
caand — joining this reversal to the lastऔर
vismṛtiḥ[there is now] a forgetting, a slipping from mind verbal noun; again the pratīpa-vidhāyin of L1 is the agentविस्मृति, भूल हुई — यहाँ भी कर्ता वही पहली पंक्ति का प्रतीप-विधायी है
yaḥ me avikalaḥ gatiḥ [asti] — he who is my unfailing recourse; tasya priyasya ca vismṛtiḥ — and [there is now] a forgetting of that very beloved.
He who is my one unfailing recourse — the refuge you cannot do without — that very beloved is now forgotten. The third reversal: the one you could never let go of is the one slipping out of mind.
avikalaḥ 'unfailing' (the quality) set against vismṛtiḥ 'oblivion' (its collapse) is the same pattern once more — the good named, then its reverse.

bata hatavidho vāme sarvaṁ prayāti viparyayam
bataalas! — the cry of grief that gathers the whole lamentहाय, अफ़सोस
hata-vidhoO accursed Fate! — hata 'struck down, wretched', vidhi 'Fate, the ordainer' vocative; picks up the pratīpa-vidhāyin of L1 and names the hidden agent of every reversal as Fate itselfहे नष्ट विधि, हे कठोर भाग्य — यह सम्बोधन पहली पंक्ति के प्रतीप-विधायी को उठा लेता है और हर उलट-फेर के छिपे कर्ता को स्वयं भाग्य नाम देता है
vāmeO perverse one — [Fate] turned the wrong way vocative feminine of vāma 'contrary, adverse'; a second address heaped on Fate (or read adverbially, 'when it runs adverse')हे विपरीत, हे प्रतिकूल — यह भाग्य पर लादा गया दूसरा सम्बोधन है (अथवा क्रियाविशेषण की तरह 'जब वह प्रतिकूल चलता है')
sarvameverything, the whole of itसब कुछ
prayātipasses into, goes over to present 3rd sg.; the one finite verb, gathering all the reversals under itचला जाता है — यही एक तिङन्त क्रिया है, जो सारी उलट-फेरों को अपने नीचे समेट लेती है
viparyayamits reverse, the very opposite accusative, the goal of prayātiविपर्यय को, उलट-फेर को — यह प्रयाति का लक्ष्य है (द्वितीया)
bata — alas; hata-vidho vāme — O accursed, perverse Fate; sarvam viparyayam prayāti — everything passes into its opposite.
Alas — accursed, perverse Fate! Everything is passing over into its very opposite. This closing line is the whole point: refuge into adversary, benefactor into neglecter, recourse into oblivion — all of it collapsing into its reverse. That collapse of good qualities into their opposites is guṇātipāta in the Sāhitya-darpaṇa's sense — not a reversal of words, but of the outcome itself.
hata-vidho (Fate) closes the ring opened by pratīpa-vidhāyin in L1 — the same vidhā 'ordaining' chimed at both ends of the verse, so the agent who works the opposites is Fate throughout. viparyaya 'reversal' is the plain name of what guṇātipāta stages.
bata! hata-vidho vāme! [tena] pratīpa-vidhāyinā — yaḥ iha bhrātuḥ śaraṇam [āsīt] tasya [pratīpaḥ kṛtaḥ]; hita-kṛt api [san] tā tasyāḥ devyāḥ samagram upekṣaṇam [jātam]; yaḥ me avikalaḥ gatiḥ [āsīt] tasya priyasya ca vismṛtiḥ [jātā]; [iti] sarvaṁ viparyayaṁ prayāti.
yaḥ iha bhrātuḥ śaraṇam (āsīt), tasya pratīpa-vidhāyinā (tena); hita-kṛt api (san) tā devyāḥ tasyāḥ samagram upekṣaṇam (kṛtam); yaḥ me avikalaḥ gatiḥ (āsīt), tasya priyasya ca vismṛtiḥ (jātā) — bata hata-vidho vāme, sarvaṁ viparyayaṁ prayāti।
Alas — O accursed, perverse Fate! By its contrary working, the very one who here was my brother's refuge has been turned against him; benefactor though he was, that queen is now wholly ignored; and he who was my one unfailing recourse — that beloved is now forgotten. Everything passes over into its very opposite.
An udāharaṇa of guṇātipāta, the sandhy-aṅga defined at kārikā 170 — here in the Sāhitya-darpaṇa's second sense (6.184), where not the words but the outcome turns contrary to the good qualities; spoken by Candrāvalī in Sanskrit in the fifth act (5.25).
