गुणातिपात वह अंग है जिसमें गुणों का उलटकर, विपरीत रूप में वर्णन किया जाता है। जब वक्ता किसी वस्तु के गुणों को सीधे न कहकर उनसे उलटे ढंग से कह देता है, तब उसे गुणातिपात कहते हैं। यहाँ पुल्लिङ्ग 'udāhṛtaḥ' नपुंसक विशेष्य 'ākhyānam' के ऊपर से लाँघकर पुल्लिङ्ग 'guṇātipātaḥ' से ही अन्वित होता है।
guṇātipāta (guṇa + atipāta, 'a stepping-over / transgression of the quality') is a technical nāṭya term for one of the sandhy-aṅgas. As the lead-in shows, it typically arises from agitation (udvega): excess distress reverses expectation, so the speaker states qualities the wrong way round.
