nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhir vidhur madhurāloka-sādhane nipuṇā |
nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhiḥwho has made the whole world pure — clear skies, clean waters (on the bhakti reading: who purifies the world of living beings) bahuvrīhi, feminine — an adjective of the śarat / bhakti still to be named; vidhur = vidhuḥ by sandhiजिसने समस्त भुवन की विशुद्धि (स्वच्छता) कर दी है — ऐसी
vidhuḥthe [autumn] moon (on the bhakti reading: the moon-faced Lord, whose light bhakti brings)चन्द्रमा से युक्त
madhura-āloka-sādhanein bringing about the sweet light — the sweet moonlight of autumn, and the sweet vision (darśana) of the moon-faced Lord locative of sphere: skilled in thisमधुर आलोक (दर्शन) के साधन में
nipuṇāexpert, skilledनिपुण है
nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhiḥ — who has made the whole world pure; vidhuḥ — the [autumn] moon; madhura-āloka-sādhane — in producing the sweet light; nipuṇā — expert.
nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhiḥ — जिसने भुवन की विशुद्धि कर दी है (वह); vidhuḥ — चन्द्रमा से युक्त; madhura-āloka-sādhane — मधुर आलोक के साधन में; nipuṇā — निपुण (है)।
This is a śleṣa — one set of words, two readings, autumn and bhakti. Autumn has cleared the whole world: clear skies, clean waters. She is the moon, expert at making sweet moonlight. Now read the very same words of bhakti: bhakti purifies the world of beings, and she is skilled at granting the sweet light — the darśana of the moon-faced Lord.
यह (शरद् ऋतु) समस्त भुवन को विशुद्ध कर देती है। वह चन्द्रमा से युक्त है। और मधुर आलोक (दर्शन) के साधन में निपुण है।
An udāharaṇa of śobhā in its second sense — the śleṣa-based definition some give (kaiścit tu), quoted from Sāhitya-darpaṇa 6.176: śliṣṭa-lakṣaṇa-citrārthā, 'a wonderful sense carried by a punning figure.' The verse is spoken by Navavṛndā in the ninth act (9.1). Its whole beauty is the double meaning: autumn (śarat) described in words that describe bhakti just as well.

ullasita-paramahaṁsā bhaktir iveyaṁ śaran miliati || 9.1 ||
ullasita-parama-haṁsāin whom the great swans are made to sport (on the bhakti reading: in whom the paramahaṁsas, the topmost devotees, are made joyful) bahuvrīhi; parama-haṁsa is the pivot of the pun — 'great swan' for the season, 'great renunciant' for the devotionजिसमें परमहंस (श्रेष्ठ हंस / श्रेष्ठ संन्यासी) उल्लसित हो रहे हैं — ऐसी
bhaktiḥ ivajust like bhakti iva marks the comparison — autumn is the subject, bhakti the thing it is likened toभक्ति की भाँति (इव शब्द उपमा दिखाता है — शरद् उपमेय, भक्ति उपमान)
iyaṁthis [autumn, now coming on]यह
śaratautumn (śarat) śaran by sandhi before mशरद् ऋतु
milatiarrives, comes togetherआ मिलती है
iyaṁ śarat — this autumn; ullasita-parama-haṁsā — in whom the great swans are made to sport; bhaktiḥ iva — just as bhakti [in whom the paramahaṁsas are made joyful]; milati — arrives.
ullasita-parama-haṁsā — जिसमें परमहंस उल्लसित हैं (वह); iyaṁ śarat — यह शरद् ऋतु; bhaktiḥ iva — भक्ति की भाँति; milati — आ मिलती है।
Here the pun turns. In autumn the great swans (haṁsa) come out and sport on the waters; in bhakti the paramahaṁsas, the highest devotees, are set aglow with joy. This autumn now arrives — just like bhakti. One word, parama-haṁsa, carries both: 'great swan' for the season, 'great renunciant' for the devotion. That double sense is exactly the śobhā this verse is quoted to show.
उल्लसित परमहंसों से युक्त यह शरद् ऋतु भक्ति की भाँति आ मिलती है। परमहंस शब्द ही श्लेष का आधार है — ऋतु के पक्ष में 'श्रेष्ठ हंस', भक्ति के पक्ष में 'श्रेष्ठ संन्यासी'।
iyaṁ śarat nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhiḥ, vidhuḥ, madhura-āloka-sādhane nipuṇā, ullasita-parama-haṁsā, bhaktiḥ iva milati.
निर्मित-भुवन-विशुद्धिः (nirmita-bhuvana-viśuddhiḥ), विधुः (vidhuḥ), मधुर-आलोक-साधने (madhura-āloka-sādhane) निपुणा (nipuṇā), उल्लसित-परमहंसा (ullasita-paramahaṁsā) इयं (iyaṁ) शरत् (śarat) भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) इव (iva) मिलति (milati)।
This autumn now arrives, and she comes just like bhakti. She has made the whole world pure — the skies are clear, the waters clean; she holds the moon and is expert at producing its sweet light; and in her the great swans (parama-haṁsa) sport in delight. Read the very same words of devotion and they hold: bhakti purifies the world of living beings, is skilled at granting the sweet light — the darśana of the moon-faced Lord — and sets the paramahaṁsas, the topmost renunciant devotees, aglow with joy. So autumn comes, the mirror-image of bhakti.
An udāharaṇa of śobhā in its second, śleṣa-based sense (the definition kaiścit tu quote from Sāhitya-darpaṇa 6.176, śliṣṭa-lakṣaṇa-citrārthā): a single set of words that describes autumn (śarat) and bhakti equally, spoken by Navavṛndā in the ninth act (9.1).
यह नवम अङ्क से उद्धृत शोभा का उदाहरण है, जहाँ श्लेष द्वारा शरद् ऋतु को भक्ति के समान वर्णित कर दोनों पक्षों में परस्पर भाव-प्राकट्य से उत्पन्न शोभा दिखायी गयी है।
