vākyaṁa statement, a spoken line — the thing being defined nom.; the viśeṣya (word being described) whose lakṣaṇa this line givesजो वाक्य — यही वह विशेष्य है जिसका लक्षण इस पंक्ति में दिया जा रहा है
yadthe kind that — sets up the defining mark that follows rel. pron. agreeing with vākyam, picked up below by tadजो (वाक्य), जिसे आगे 'तद्' से पकड़ा गया है
gūḍha-tulyārthaṁwhose openly-stated meaning is matched by a hidden one of equal force — it says one thing plainly while a second, veiled sense of the same weight runs beneath it bahuvrīhi qualifying vākyam: gūḍha 'hidden' + tulya 'equal, matching' + artha 'meaning'; this is the load-bearing word — the whole definition turns on the two meanings being commensurateजिसका छिपा हुआ (गूढ) अर्थ प्रकट अर्थ के तुल्य (समान बलवाला) हो — बहुव्रीहि; यही भार उठाने वाला पद है, क्योंकि सारा लक्षण दोनों अर्थों के समान होने पर ही टिका है
tadthat very statement — resumes the vākya just marked out correlative of yad, subject of the predicateवही (वाक्य), जो 'यद्' का सहसम्बन्धी और वाक्य का उद्देश्य है

matamis held to be — the received definition's 'is deemed' ppp. of √man; marks a settled definition Rūpa adopts rather than one he coinsमाना गया है — यह रूप गोस्वामी की गढ़ी हुई नहीं, अपितु स्वीकृत परिभाषा है
yad vākyaṁ — the statement which; gūḍha-tulyārthaṁ — has an overt meaning matched by a hidden one of equal force; tad — that very statement; udāharaṇaṁ — is udāharaṇa; matam — is held to be.
udāharaṇa is a statement carrying two meanings at once. Its plain, spoken sense is matched by a hidden sense of equal force — the speaker says one thing on the surface while a second, veiled meaning of the same weight runs beneath it. Any line built that way is what is 'held to be' udāharaṇa. The stress falls on gūḍha-tulyārtha: it is not merely that a hidden meaning is present, but that the concealed sense is fully commensurate with the stated one — the two run side by side. The word matam shows Rūpa is taking over a received definition, not making up his own.
udāharaṇa is one of the sandhy-aṅgas, the limbs that make up the junctures of a play; note that it is not the ordinary sense of udāharaṇa as 'example, illustration' but a technical beat — a speech deliberately built with a double purport. Rūpa defines it by that structure: an overt meaning tulya (matched, commensurate) with a gūḍha (hidden) one. The commentary's frame calls this concealed layer the viśeṣārtha, the special sense fitted into the line, as in the illustration where a surface description of a lovely deer and a moving golden creeper carries a veiled compliment to Rādhā of equal force.
yad vākyaṁ gūḍha-tulyārthaṁ, tad udāharaṇaṁ matam.
yad vākyaṁ gūḍha-tulyārthaṁ (स्यात्), tad udāharaṇaṁ matam।
A statement whose openly-spoken meaning is matched, beneath it, by a hidden meaning of equal force is held to be udāharaṇa: the line says one thing plainly on the surface while a second, veiled sense of the very same weight runs alongside it.
The kārikā's lakṣaṇa of udāharaṇa, a sandhy-aṅga: a speech deliberately built so its overt sense is commensurate (tulya) with a concealed (gūḍha) one — matam marking it as a received, not coined, definition.
