The roll-call of the ornaments begins. Verse 8.16 announced that a play's body should be adorned with thirty-six bhūṣaṇas; now Rūpa simply names them, one after another, and the definitions come later. This line gives the first five: bhūṣaṇa, adornment proper — speech dressed up with fine qualities; akṣara-saṅghāta, a tight cluster of syllables; hetu, giving a reason; prāpti, arriving at a wished-for point; and udāhṛti, clinching a point by an instance. These are bare names in a list — no verb, just the terms lined up.
This kārikā opens the enumeration of the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas (the classical thirty-six 'ornaments' / lakṣaṇas of Sanskrit drama, going back to Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra), announced one verse earlier in 8.16. The full list runs across 8.17–8.20 and is closed there by 'ṣaḍ-triṁśad-bhūṣaṇāni hi' — 'these are the thirty-six ornaments.' 8.17 names the first ten; the glosses here give only each term's plain sense, since this verse only names them.

That completes the first ten of the thirty-six. The enumeration carries straight on into 8.18.

A definition kārikā that opens the enumeration of the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas (drama's classical 'ornaments') announced in 8.16, naming here the first ten in a bare list — bhūṣaṇa through nidarśana.
