L1objection
keṣāṁcid eṣām aṅgānāṁ vaiphalyaṁ kecid ūcire |
keṣāṁcitof only some — not all — of them partitive genitive, singling out a subset of the aṅgasइनमें से कुछ का — अर्थात् इन सन्धि-अंगों में से कुछ थोड़े-से अंगों का
eṣām aṅgānāmof these aṅgas — the sub-limbs of the junctures genitive; eṣām 'these' points back to the sandhy-aṅgas just enumeratedइन अंगों का — 'एषाम्' अर्थात् अभी जिनकी गणना हुई उन सन्धि-अंगों की ओर संकेत
vaiphalyamthat they are useless — that they serve no dramatic purpose the thing declared, object of ūcireव्यर्थता — कि वे निष्फल हैं, छोड़ देने योग्य हैं; यही जो कहा गया उसका विषय
kecitsome [theorists] — a certain party, left unnamed for now nominative subject; who they are is supplied in L2कुछ लोगों ने — कर्ता; वे कौन हैं यह अगली पंक्ति में बताया जाएगा
ūcirehave declared, have stated perfect of √vac, 'they said'कहा — √वच् का लिट् (परोक्ष भूत), 'उन्होंने कहा'
kecit — some theorists; eṣām aṅgānām — of these aṅgas; keṣāṁcit — of only some among them; vaiphalyam — their uselessness; ūcire — have declared.
Some theorists have declared that certain of these aṅgas — the sub-limbs of the junctures — are useless, serving no real dramatic purpose. Note the word 'some': not all of the aṅgas, only a subset of them.
The aṅgas here are the sandhy-aṅgas, the sub-limbs of the five junctures (sandhis) of a play, catalogued in this vibhāga. The claim being reported is that a few of them can be dropped without loss.
L2reply
daśarūpaka-kārādyās tat sarveṣāṁ na sammatam ||
daśarūpaka-kārādyāḥnamely, the authors of the Daśarūpaka and the like nominative plural, in apposition to kecit of L1 — it names who those 'some' areदशरूपक के रचयिता आदि — पूर्व पंक्ति के 'कुछ लोगों' के साथ समानाधिकरण; वे 'कुछ' कौन हैं, यही बताता है
tatthat [view of theirs] nominative neuter subject of sammatamवह — अर्थात् वह मत (कि कुछ अंग व्यर्थ हैं); सम्मत का कर्तृविषय
sarveṣāmto everyone — accepted by all genitive with sammata, 'agreeable to whom'सब आचार्यों को — किन-किन को सम्मत, इस अर्थ में सम्बन्ध
na sammatamis not accepted, is not agreedसम्मत नहीं — मान्य नहीं
daśarūpaka-kārādyāḥ — [those 'some' are] the authors of the Daśarūpaka and the like; tat — that view; sarveṣām — to everyone; na sammatam — is not agreed.
These 'some' are the authors of the Daśarūpaka and works like it. But their view — that certain aṅgas are useless — is not accepted by everyone. Rūpa reports the position without endorsing it, and marks that it is a minority opinion.
The Daśarūpaka is Dhanañjaya's treatise (c. 10th century) on the ten forms of Sanskrit drama; here it stands for the school of dramaturges who held some sandhy-aṅgas to be optional. Rūpa neither adopts nor refutes them — he only notes that the reduction is not universally agreed.
daśarūpaka-kārādyāḥ kecit eṣām aṅgānām keṣāṁcit vaiphalyam ūcire; tat [tu] sarveṣām na sammatam.
Some theorists — namely the authors of the Daśarūpaka and works like it — have declared that a few among these aṅgas, the sub-limbs of the junctures, are useless and serve no dramatic purpose; but that view is not accepted by everyone.
A reported-and-qualified objection: names the Daśarūpaka school's claim that some sandhy-aṅgas may be dropped, then marks it as a minority opinion Rūpa neither adopts nor refutes.
