yatra — the junction in which; pralobhana-krodha-vyasana-ādyaiḥ — through temptation, anger, calamity, and the like; vimṛśyate — the plot is deliberated over.
Rūpa now defines the vimarśa-sandhi, the fourth of the play's five junctures. It is the juncture in which the course of the plot is deliberated over — weighed, checked, and reconsidered. What forces this pause for thought is some sudden pressure: a temptation, a flare of anger, a calamity, or anything of that kind. Because such things make the characters (and the action) stop and reconsider, the junction is called vimarśa, 'deliberation'.
The Sanskrit play is built of five sandhis (junctures): mukha (opening), pratimukha (progression), garbha (development), vimarśa (the pause / crisis of deliberation), and nirvahaṇa (conclusion). vimarśa (also called avamarśa) is the fourth. It takes its name from the verb here, vimṛśyate, 'is deliberated over': at this stage the plot's advance is checked by some obstacle and its direction is thought through afresh.
L2definition
bījavān garbha-nirbhinnaḥ sa vimarśa itīryate ||
bījavāncarrying the bīja — the seed of the plot planted at the start nominative describing sa; -vat = 'possessing'बीज से युक्त (जिसमें आरम्भ का मूल बीज विद्यमान है)
garbha-nirbhinnaḥand now burst forth out of the garbha, the development-junction before it nominative describing sa; nir-√bhid = 'to split open, break out from'गर्भसन्धि को फोड़कर बाहर निकला हुआ (जो गर्भ के आवरण से फूट पड़ा है)
sathat junction — picking up the yatra of L1 nominative; the antecedent answering the relativeवह (सन्धि) — यही 'यत्र' का उत्तर देनेवाला है
vimarśaḥis vimarśa, the pause-and-reconsider junction predicate nominative naming the term definedविमर्श — यही उसका परिभाषित नाम है
iti īryateis what it is called / so it is declared iti closes the naming; īryate is passive, 'is said'इस प्रकार कहा जाता है ('इति' नाम को समाप्त करता है, 'ईर्यते' कर्मवाच्य में 'कहा जाता है')
sa — that junction; bījavān — carrying the seed of the plot; garbha-nirbhinnaḥ — and burst forth out of the garbha before it; vimarśaḥ iti — as 'vimarśa'; īryate — is declared.
That same junction still carries the bīja — the seed of the plot that was sown at the very beginning and has been growing ever since. Here that seed, having ripened in the garbha (the development-junction just before), now bursts fully open. This junction — seed-bearing and broken out of the garbha, its plot deliberated over — is what the authorities call vimarśa.
bīja, the 'seed', is the germ of the whole plot dropped in at the outset; it grows through the junctures and comes to a head here. garbha ('womb, gestation') is the third junction, where the seed develops under cover; garbha-nirbhinna says the seed has now split out of that cover — the plot, no longer merely germinating, stands exposed and must be reckoned with, which is exactly why deliberation (vimarśa) sets in.
yatra pralobhana-krodha-vyasana-ādyaiḥ vimṛśyate, bījavān garbha-nirbhinnaḥ saḥ vimarśaḥ iti īryate.
The juncture in which the course of the plot is deliberated over afresh — weighed and reconsidered under the pressure of some temptation, some flare of anger, some calamity, or the like — that same juncture, still carrying the bīja (the seed of the plot sown at the outset) now burst forth out of the garbha (the development-juncture just before it), is what the authorities call the vimarśa-sandhi.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the vimarśa-sandhi, the fourth of the play's five junctures: named from vi-√mṛś ('to reconsider'), it is where the seed-plot, broken out of the garbha, is halted and thought through under some provoking pressure.
