abhūtāharaṇam — abhūtāharaṇa; tat vākyam syāt — is just that speech; yat — which; kapaṭa-āśrayam — rests on deception.
This line defines abhūtāharaṇa, one of the limbs (aṅgas) of the garbha-sandhi, the 'germ' juncture of a play. The definition is simple: abhūtāharaṇa is a speech that rests on deception. That is, when a character says something built on a pretext or fraud — putting forward what is not really so in order to serve a hidden aim — that speech is called abhūtāharaṇa.
abhūtāharaṇa — literally 'bringing forward what is not,' i.e. adducing something false or feigned. It is a technical term of Sanskrit dramaturgy (nāṭya-śāstra): one of the limbs of the garbha-sandhi, alongside udvega, sambhrama, and ākṣepa named in the lead-in. The standard treatises define it the same way — a speech founded on a pretext (kapaṭa).
yat vākyam kapaṭa-āśrayam (bhavati), tat abhūtāharaṇam syāt.
That speech which rests on deception — one built upon a pretext or fraud — is what should be called abhūtāharaṇa.
Defines abhūtāharaṇa, a limb (aṅga) of the garbha-sandhi: a speech founded on deception (kapaṭa) — one of the four (with udvega, sambhrama, ākṣepa) named in the lead-in.
