narma-jātā ruciḥ prājñaiḥ narma-dyutir udāhṛtā ||
narma-jātāthat has sprung from playful jest (narma) — describing the ruci bahuvrīhi/past-participle compound qualifying ruciḥ (fem.)
ruciḥthe delight, the relish that arisesरुचि अर्थात् आनन्द (प्रीति का उमड़ना)
prājñaiḥthe wise declare it — they are the ones who name it so instrumental of agent governing the passive udāhṛtāविद्वानों के द्वारा (जो इस लक्षण के कर्ता हैं)
narma-dyutiḥas narma-dyuti, the glow of jest (dyuti = radiance, sparkle) predicate nominative — the name assigned to the ruci'नर्म-द्युति' (नर्म की द्युति) — यही नाम उस रुचि को दिया गया
udāhṛtāis called, is set down as past passive participle, fem., agreeing with ruciḥकही गई है, नाम दिया गया है (कर्मवाच्य में विद्वानों द्वारा)
narma-jātā ruciḥ — the delight that springs from playful jest; prājñaiḥ — by the wise; narma-dyutiḥ udāhṛtā — is declared to be narma-dyuti.
The wise give a name to the delight that lights up when jesting begins. That relish, born of playful banter, they call narma-dyuti — the sparkle of jest. So it is not the jesting itself, but the glow of pleasure the jesting kindles, that this limb names.
narma-dyuti ('the glow of jest') is one of the sandhy-aṅgas, the component limbs of the dramatic junctures treated in this sixth vibhāga; it belongs to the mukha-sandhi (the opening juncture). Rūpa defines it here as the ruci (delight) that narma produces, distinguishing it from narma (the jesting speech itself), defined just before. The surrounding lead-in dialogue between the characters is the treatise's illustration of jest in play.
prājñaiḥ narma-jātā ruciḥ narma-dyutiḥ (iti) udāhṛtā.
The delight that springs up when playful jesting begins — that relish, born of narma (banter), the wise have declared to be narma-dyuti, 'the glow of jest.'
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā defining narma-dyuti — one of the sandhy-aṅgas (component limbs of the dramatic junctures) belonging to the mukha-sandhi: it names not the jesting itself but the ruci (delight) that jesting kindles, marking off narma-dyuti from narma defined just before; the preceding Jaṭilā–Mādhava exchange (‘atra prakaṭam eva narma’) stands as its illustration.
