mukhaṁ bīja-samutpattir nānārtha-rasa-sambhavā |
mukhamthe mukha-sandhi, the opening juncture of the play — here the term being definedमुख नामक सन्धि
bīja-samutpattiḥis the springing-up of the bīja (the seed of the whole plot) — the moment the seed is first sown predicate nominative equating mukham with this event; samutpattiḥ is feminine, so the following adjective agrees with itवही है बीज का उद्गम अर्थात् जहाँ कथावस्तु के बीज की उत्पत्ति होती है
nānārtha-rasa-sambhavāand it is the source from which the various arthas (sub-aims the action pursues) and rasas (moods to be developed) arise bahuvrīhi agreeing with samutpattiḥ (fem.) — 'that in which the origin of many arthas and rasas lies'जिसमें अनेक अर्थों और रसों का प्रादुर्भाव होता है (समुत्पत्तिः का विशेषण, बहुव्रीहि)
mukham — the opening juncture; bīja-samutpattiḥ — is the springing-up of the seed; nānārtha-rasa-sambhavā — from which the various arthas and rasas arise.
This defines the mukha-sandhi, the opening juncture of a play. It is the moment the bīja — the seed of the whole plot — is first sown. And from that one seed spring the various arthas, the sub-purposes the action will go on to pursue, and the various rasas, the moods the play will develop. So the opening juncture is where everything the play will later unfold is first set in motion.
The mukha is the first of the five sandhis (junctures) of a play — mukha, pratimukha, garbha, avamarśa, and nirvahaṇa — and corresponds to the ārambha (beginning) stage of the action. It is defined by the planting of the bīja, the seed-cause from which the whole plot and its rasa grow.

The twelve mukha-sandhy-aṅgas are the standard limbs the dramaturgical tradition assigns to the opening juncture (upakṣepa, parikara, parinyāsa, vilobhana, yukti, prāpti, samādhāna, vidhāna, paribhāvanā, udbheda, karaṇa, and bheda). The following kārikās take them up in turn.

Rūpa's defining kārikā of the mukha-sandhi (first of the five junctures): it identifies the mukha with the sowing of the plot-seed from which all arthas and rasas grow, then announces its twelve aṅgas, ordered to the seed's unfolding — the limbs the following kārikās take up in turn.
