The verse — decoded
L1definition
mukha-pratimukhe garbha-vimarśāv upasaṁhṛtiḥ |
mukha-pratimukhethe mukha (the opening juncture, where the seed of the plot is planted) and the pratimukha (the progression juncture, where that seed sprouts and the action advances) dvandva in the nominative dual — two of the five items being listedमुख और प्रतिमुख — (गिनाई जा रही पाँच सन्धियों में से) पहली दो सन्धियाँ
garbha-vimarśauthe garbha (the development juncture, lit. 'the womb', where the goal is nearly reached, then blocked) and the vimarśa (the pause-and-crisis juncture, where a setback or hesitation delays the goal) dvandva in the nominative dual — the third and fourth itemsगर्भ और विमर्श — तीसरी और चौथी सन्धि
upasaṁhṛtiḥand the upasaṁhṛti (the conclusion juncture, where the goal is finally won and the action is wound up) nominative singular — the fifth and last item; also called nirvahaṇaउपसंहृति — पाँचवीं और अन्तिम सन्धि, जिसे निर्वहण भी कहते हैं
mukha-pratimukhe — the mukha and the pratimukha; garbha-vimarśau — the garbha and the vimarśa; upasaṁhṛtiḥ — the upasaṁhṛti.
A play's action moves through five joints, or sandhis. First the mukha, the opening, where the plot's seed is set down. Then the pratimukha, where that seed begins to grow and the story moves forward. Then the garbha, the 'womb', where the goal comes close but is checked. Then the vimarśa, the pause, where a setback or second thought holds the goal back. Last the upasaṁhṛti, the wind-up, where the goal is finally reached.
sandhi here is a technical dramaturgical term: a 'joint' or structural juncture of the plot, not the grammatical sandhi of sound-combination. The five correspond to the five stages a plot's action (kārya) passes through on its way from beginning to fulfilment. upasaṁhṛti is the same juncture other treatises call nirvahaṇa.
L2avataranika
pañcaite sandhayas teṣu mukha-lakṣaṇam ucyate ||
pañca etethese, just named, are five in number pañca 'five' agreeing with ete 'these' — closing off the enumeration of L1ये पाँच — 'पाँच' शब्द 'ये' के साथ आकर L1 की गणना को समेट देता है
sandhayaḥare the sandhis — the structural junctures of a play's plot nominative plural, the predicate of eteसन्धियाँ हैं — 'ये' का विधेय
teṣuamong these five locative plural — 'of/among them', selecting one to define firstउनमें से — पहले किसे परिभाषित करना है, यह चुनते हुए
mukha-lakṣaṇamthe defining marks of the mukha, the first juncture lakṣaṇa — the technical 'definition' about to be givenमुख का लक्षण — जो पारिभाषिक परिभाषा अब दी जाने वाली है
ucyateis now stated — taken up next passive present, announcing the topic of the coming kārikāकहा जाता है — कर्मवाच्य, आगामी कारिका के विषय की घोषणा करते हुए
ete pañca sandhayaḥ — these five are the sandhis; teṣu — among them; mukha-lakṣaṇam ucyate — the definition of the mukha is now stated.
So these five are the sandhis, the joints of a play's action. Now, from among the five, he takes up the first. The defining marks of the mukha, the opening juncture, are stated next.
The line does two jobs. It closes the enumeration begun in L1 — the sandhis are exactly five, no more — and it sets the agenda for what follows: the mukha is defined first, then the remaining four in turn. This is the standard treatise move of listing a set, then unfolding each member.
mukha-pratimukhe garbha-vimarśau upasaṁhṛtiḥ — ete pañca sandhayaḥ; teṣu mukha-lakṣaṇam ucyate.
The mukha (the opening juncture), the pratimukha (the progression juncture), the garbha (the development juncture), the vimarśa (the pause-and-crisis juncture), and the upasaṁhṛti (the conclusion juncture) — these are the five sandhis, the structural joints through which a play's action moves from its beginning to its fulfilment; and of these five, the defining marks of the mukha are stated first.
A definition kārikā: it enumerates the five sandhis (dramatic junctures) of a plot and announces that the mukha will be defined first.
