L1definition
yat tu svalpam upakṣiptaṁ bahudhā vistṛtiṁ gatam |
yatthat which — the relative pronoun singling out the plot-element now being defined, to be answered by tat in the next line nominative neuter subject; correlative yat … tatजो (प्रकृति) — यह 'यत्' आगे आने वाले 'तत्' का सम्बन्धी है
tunow — marking the turn to defining the first arthaprakṛti, the bīja, in its own rightपरन्तु — छोटे आरम्भ और बड़े विस्तार का भेद दिखाने के लिए
svalpamthough only slight — tiny when it first shows up predicate nominative agreeing with yat; concessive here, set against the expansion that followsअत्यन्त थोड़ा, छोटा-सा — यद्यपि आरम्भ में तनिक ही होता है
upakṣiptamwhen merely dropped in — lightly hinted at, planted at the very outset nominative neuter past participle, agreeing with yatसंकेत मात्र से रख दिया गया, इंगित कर दिया गया
bahudhāin many directions — branching out variously as the play proceeds adverbअनेक प्रकार से, अनेक रूपों में
vistṛtiṁ gatamspreads into wide expansion — goes on to unfold broadly (vistṛtim, the object, taken with gatam, 'gone to') vistṛtim accusative + gatam past participle; the idiom 'gone to expansion' = 'becomes expanded'विस्तार को प्राप्त हो जाता है, फैल जाता है
yat — that which; tu — now; svalpam — though slight; upakṣiptam — when merely dropped in; bahudhā vistṛtiṁ gatam — spreads out in many directions into wide expansion.
Rūpa defines the bīja, the 'seed' of the plot. It is that element which, though slight when it is first hinted at, then branches out in many directions and expands widely as the play unfolds. Small at the start, vast in its consequences.
bīja, 'seed,' is the first of the five arthaprakṛti (plot-elements) listed in the previous kārikā (bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, kārya). The name carries the image the definition unpacks: like a seed that is small when sown but grows into the whole plant, the bīja is a small opening cause that unfolds into the entire dramatic action.
L2definition
kāryasya kāraṇaṁ dhīrais tad bījam iti kathyate ||
kāryasyaof the final goal — the kārya, the play's culminating purpose (itself the fifth arthaprakṛti) genitive dependent on kāraṇamकार्य का, अन्तिम फल का — जिसकी ओर नाटक चलता है
kāraṇamis the cause — the seed being what ultimately gives rise to that goal predicate nominative agreeing with yat/tatकारण, हेतु
dhīraiḥso the wise — learned authorities on drama instrumental of agent with the passive kathyateधीर विद्वानों के द्वारा
tatthat — the correlative answering yat, pointing back to the element just described nominative neuterवह (उपर्युक्त प्रकृति)
bījam iticall the 'bīja,' the seed (iti marking the naming) iti quotative, giving the technical name assigned'बीज' इस नाम से
kathyateis named passive present, its agent being dhīraiḥकहा जाता है — इसका कर्ता धीर विद्वान् हैं
kāryasya — of the final goal; kāraṇam — [that which is] the cause; tat — that; dhīraiḥ — the wise; bījam iti — as 'bīja,' the seed; kathyate — name.
And that same element is the cause of the kārya, the play's ultimate goal. This, the learned call the bīja, the seed. So the definition has two marks: it starts small and expands manifoldly, and it is the root cause from which the whole aim of the drama grows.
kāryasya kāraṇam ties the seed to the last arthaprakṛti: the bīja is small at first but is the very cause of the kārya, the final result the play works toward — the arc from seed to fruit is built into the set of five.
yat tu svalpam upakṣiptaṁ [sat] bahudhā vistṛtiṁ gatam kāryasya kāraṇaṁ [ca], tad dhīraiḥ bījam iti kathyate.
yat tu svalpam upakṣiptam (सत्) bahudhā vistṛtiṁ gatam, (यत् च) kāryasya kāraṇam (भवति), tat dhīraiḥ 'bījam' iti kathyate।
That plot-element which, though only slight when it is first lightly dropped in, then branches out in many directions into wide expansion, and which is the cause of the kārya, the play's final goal — that the wise call the bīja, the 'seed.'
Rūpa's own defining kārikā (lakṣaṇa) of the bīja, the first of the five arthaprakṛti: the seed is marked as small at its planting yet the manifoldly-expanding root-cause of the drama's whole aim.
