The verse — decoded
L1conclusion
ata evāmukhaṁ tatra bhavel lalita-mādhave |
ata evafor exactly this reason — because a play steeped in śṛṅgāra takes the āmukha as its prologue (kārikā 28, nc.4.27) ataḥ (abl. adv., 'from this') + eva restricting to 'this and nothing else' — hence 'for exactly this reason'; visarga of ataḥ elided before evaइसी कारण से ही (पूर्व में जो कहा गया, उसी हेतु से — और किसी हेतु से नहीं; 'eva' इस अर्थ को सीमित करता है)
āmukhaṁan āmukha, the opening prologue — is what it carries nom. sing., subject of bhavetआमुख (नाटक का आरम्भिक मुखभाग — वाक्य का कर्ता)
tatrathere — in that very work, pointing ahead to the Lalita-Mādhava loc. adv., a correlative resolved by lalita-mādhave at the line's endवहाँ (जिसका निर्धारण पंक्ति के अन्त में 'ललित-माधव में' से होता है)
bhavelduly appears / it is fitting that there be optative bhavet of √bhū (t → l before lalita-); the mild optative marks what properly occurs, not a bare 'is'होना चाहिए (विधिलिङ् — जो उचित रूप से होता है, केवल 'है' नहीं)
lalita-mādhavein the Lalita-Mādhava — Rūpa's own drama, itself rich in śṛṅgāra loc. sing., the work tatra points toललित-माधव नामक नाटक में ('वहाँ' जिसकी ओर संकेत करता है)
ata eva — for exactly this reason; tatra lalita-mādhave — there in the Lalita-Mādhava; āmukhaṁ bhavet — an āmukha duly appears.
This line looks straight back at the last kārikā, which laid down that a play saturated with śṛṅgāra takes the āmukha as its prologue. For exactly that reason, Rūpa says, his own Lalita-Mādhava — a śṛṅgāra play — has an āmukha. He is showing that his own practice follows the rule he has just stated.
āmukha (also called the prologue): the opening scene in which the sūtradhāra, the stage-manager, converses with the naṭī or another actor and so leads the audience into the play. Kept in IAST here because it is a technical term of dramaturgy, not an ordinary word for 'preface'.
L2definition
prastāvanā-sthāpane dve āmukhasyāpare bhide |
prastāvanā-sthāpanethe prastāvanā and the sthāpanā — the two named forms of prologue in question dvandva, nom. dual — the pair that is the subject of the lineप्रस्तावना और स्थापना (द्वन्द्व समास, द्विवचन — पंक्ति का कर्ता यही युगल है)
dvetwo [in number] nom. dual, agreeing with the pairये दो (द्विवचन, उस युगल के अनुरूप)
āmukhasyabelonging to the āmukha — the one class they fall under gen. sing.; the āmukha is the genus these two divideआमुख के (षष्ठी — आमुख वह जाति है जिसके ये दो विभाग हैं)
apareas its two further kinds — beside the āmukha taken plainly nom. dual, 'other'; marks them as additional varieties, not the same thing over againऔर (अन्य / अतिरिक्त) — अर्थात् ये पुनः वही नहीं, अपितु आमुख की अलग-अलग विधाएँ हैं
prastāvanā-sthāpane dve — the prastāvanā and the sthāpanā, two [forms]; āmukhasya apare bhide — are the two further divisions of the āmukha.
Now Rūpa classifies. The āmukha is not a single undivided thing. Under it fall two further named kinds: the prastāvanā and the sthāpanā. These two count as its subdivisions — the same prologue, sorted into two varieties. The verse Rūpa quotes next (nc.4.29) is where the difference between them is spelled out.
prastāvanā and sthāpanā: two technical sub-types of the āmukha. By the verse Rūpa cites immediately after (nc.4.29), they are distinguished by how much vīthī-material the prologue folds in and by which rasa predominates — the prastāvanā fitting vīra, adbhuta and the like, the sthāpanā fitting hāsya, bībhatsa, raudra and such.
L3avataranika
ity ākhyāya sphuṭaṁ kecit tayoḥ kurvanti lakṣaṇam ||
ity ākhyāyahaving stated just this much — the classification of the two kinds iti closes the statement of L2; ākhyāya, gerund of ā-√khyā, 'having declared'ऐसा कहकर ('iti' से पिछली पंक्ति (L2) का कथन समाप्त होता है; 'ākhyāya' — कह चुकने पर)
sphuṭaṁexplicitly, in so many words adverbial acc. qualifying kurvanti — they set the definition out in full, not by hintस्पष्ट रूप से (क्रियाविशेषण — वे लक्षण को पूर्ण रूप में करते हैं, केवल संकेत से नहीं)
kecitsome [authorities] — other writers on dramaturgy nom. pl., indefinite; Rūpa reports their formulation, marking it as theirs rather than simply his ownकुछ (आचार्य) — रूप गोस्वामी उनके कथन को उन्हीं का बताकर उद्धृत करते हैं, अपना नहीं
tayoḥof those two — the prastāvanā and the sthāpanā gen. dual, resuming the pair of L2उन दोनों का (षष्ठी द्विवचन — L2 के उसी युगल का पुनर्ग्रहण)
kurvantigo on to frame / give pres.
lakṣaṇama defining characterization — a lakṣaṇa acc. sing., object of kurvantiलक्षण ('करते हैं' का कर्म)
iti ākhyāya — having stated this; kecit — some authorities; tayoḥ — of those two; sphuṭaṁ lakṣaṇam kurvanti — explicitly frame a definition.
Having sorted the prologue into these two kinds, Rūpa adds that some authorities go one step further: they lay down an explicit definition of each — of the prastāvanā and of the sthāpanā. This line sets up the quotation that follows. The word kecit, 'some', signals that Rūpa is reporting others' wording, and the verse he cites next (nc.4.29) is where that definition is given in full.
ata eva tatra lalita-mādhave āmukhaṁ bhavet; prastāvanā-sthāpane dve āmukhasya apare bhide (iti); iti ākhyāya kecit tayoḥ sphuṭaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ kurvanti.
For exactly this reason an āmukha, the opening prologue, duly appears there in the Lalita-Mādhava; and the prastāvanā and the sthāpanā are its two further divisions — having stated just this much, some authorities go on to frame an explicit definition of those two.
A conclusion applying the previous kārikā's rule to Rūpa's own Lalita-Mādhava, then a definition splitting the āmukha into two sub-types (prastāvanā, sthāpanā), and an avataraṇikā setting up the definition verse quoted next (nc.4.29).
