This defines the pravartaka. It is one of the kinds of prastāvanā, the prologue the Sūtradhāra speaks before the play proper. In this kind, a character's entrance — the getting-under-way of the action — is prompted by a correspondence of the season. The Sūtradhāra names the time of year, and that very likeness of season draws the character onto the stage. So in the illustration that follows, it is the arrival of spring (vasanta) that brings Mādhava on.
pravartaka is one of the recognized varieties of prastāvanā (āmukha), the Sūtradhāra's prologue; the same vibhāga just defined another, kathodghāta (4.14). kāla-sāmya, 'likeness of time', is the seasonal correspondence — the season announced on stage matching the situation of the play — by which the pravartaka launches the action.
pravṛttiḥ kāla-sāmyena ākṣiptaṁ [san] pravartakaṁ syāt
When the entrance of the action — a character's coming on that gets the play under way — is prompted by a correspondence of season, that variety of prologue is called the pravartaka.
Defines the pravartaka, one of the varieties of prastāvanā (the Sūtradhāra's prologue): the entrance launched by a matching of the season (kāla-sāmya).
