kriyāsu kalyāṇaṁ bhujaga-śayanād utthitavataḥ |
kriyāsuḥmay they bring about — the benediction that carries this nāndī benedictive (āśīrliṅ) 3rd plural of √kṛ; its subject is kaṭākṣāḥ in L2; visarga dropped before the following kकरें, कर दें — √कृ का आशीर्लिङ् (आशीर्वादपरक), प्रथम पुरुष बहुवचन; इसका कर्ता L2 का कटाक्षाः है (क के पूर्व विसर्ग लुप्त)
kalyāṇaṁwell-being, good fortune — what is prayed for accusative, the object of kriyāsuḥकल्याण को — द्वितीया, kriyāsuḥ का कर्म
bhujaga-śayanādup from his serpent-couch — the bed of the coiled Śeṣa ablative, 'from', point of risingसर्प-शय्या से — पञ्चमी, उठने का स्थान बताती है
utthitavataḥof him who has just risen — that is, of Hari, freshly awakened genitive of the perfect participle utthitavat, agreeing with harer in L3उठे हुए (हरि) के — षष्ठी, भूत कृदन्त utthitavat, L3 के harer का विशेषण
kaṭākṣāḥ (L2) — the sidelong glances; kalyāṇaṁ — well-being; kriyāsuḥ — may bring about; bhujaga-śayanāt utthitavataḥ hareḥ (L3) — of Hari risen from his serpent-couch.
This is the benediction that opens the play: may the sidelong glances of Hari bring about well-being. Hari has just risen from his serpent-couch — the coiled bed of Śeṣa where he lies — and as he awakes his eyes turn sideways in the glances the rest of the verse will describe.
An udāharaṇa of the daśapadānvitā nāndī — the ten-pada benedictory prologue-verse — one of the pada-counts (eight, ten, or twelve) laid down for the nāndī in kārikā 16 (nc.4.2). The illustration is quoted from the Abhirāma-rāghava. Counting the inflected words (pada) gives exactly ten: kriyāsuḥ, kalyāṇam, bhujaga-śayanāt, utthitavataḥ, kaṭākṣāḥ, kāruṇya-prasara-rasa-veṇī-laharayaḥ, hareḥ, lakṣmī-līlā-kamala-dala-saubhāgya-suhṛdaḥ, sudhāsāra-smerāḥ, sucarita-viśeṣaika-sulabhāḥ.

kaṭākṣāḥ kāruṇya-prasara-rasa-veṇī-laharayaḥ |
kaṭākṣāḥthe sidelong glances — the subject of the whole benediction nominative plural, subject of kriyāsuḥ (L1)कटाक्ष (तिरछी चितवनें) — प्रथमा बहुवचन, kriyāsuḥ (L1) का कर्ता
kāruṇya-prasara-rasa-veṇī-laharayaḥwhich are the waves in the braided stream of the flowing rasa of his compassion — glance after glance breaking like ripples on a river of mercy nominative plural, in apposition to kaṭākṣāḥ; a cascading compound — laharayaḥ (waves) of the veṇī (stream) of the rasa (liquid) of the prasara (outpouring) of kāruṇya (compassion)करुणा के उमड़ पड़ने के रस की धारा की लहरें (जैसे) — प्रथमा बहुवचन, कटाक्षों का विशेषण; एक के भीतर एक बहता समास: करुणा (दया) का प्रसर (उमड़ना), उसका रस (द्रव), उसकी वेणी (धारा), उसकी लहरें
kaṭākṣāḥ — the sidelong glances; kāruṇya-prasara-rasa-veṇī-laharayaḥ — [glances that are] the waves in the streaming river of the rasa of his outpouring compassion.
Now the subject named: his sidelong glances. They are like waves on a river. Picture his compassion (kāruṇya) pouring out (prasara) as a flowing liquid (rasa); that outflow gathers into a braided stream (veṇī); and each glance he casts is one more wave (laharī) rising on it. The glances are compassion made visible, moving.

harer lakṣmī-līlā-kamala-dala-saubhāgya-suhṛdaḥ
harerof Hari — whose glances these are, the one risen from the serpent-couch in L1 genitive, holding utthitavataḥ (L1) and governing kaṭākṣāḥहरि के — षष्ठी, L1 के utthitavataḥ को धारण करती और कटाक्षों की स्वामिनी बताती है
lakṣmī-līlā-kamala-dala-saubhāgya-suhṛdaḥcompanions to the loveliness of the petals of Lakṣmī's play-lotus — glances as lovely as the lotus-petals she toys with nominative plural qualifying kaṭākṣāḥ; suhṛd ('friend, kin') here = a match or peer of that loveliness (saubhāgya)लक्ष्मी की लीला के कमल-दल के सौन्दर्य के जोड़/समान — प्रथमा बहुवचन, कटाक्षों का विशेषण; यहाँ सुहृद् ('मित्र, सजातीय') का अर्थ है उस सौभाग्य (सौन्दर्य) की समता या जोड़
hareḥ — Hari's [glances]; lakṣmī-līlā-kamala-dala-saubhāgya-suhṛdaḥ — kin to the loveliness of the petals of Lakṣmī's play-lotus.
The glances are Hari's. And they are the friends — the peers — of the beauty of the lotus-petals. Whose lotus? Lakṣmī's play-lotus (līlā-kamala), the flower she holds and toys with at his side. His long sidelong eyes are as lovely as those petals; they are cut to the same beautiful shape.

sucarita-viśeṣaika-sulabhāḥwon only by some extraordinary merit — got by no ordinary luck, but by one special store of good deeds alone nominative plural qualifying kaṭākṣāḥ; eka here restricts — 'only, and by nothing else', modifying viśeṣa-sucaritaकिसी विशेष सुचरित (पुण्य) से ही सुलभ — प्रथमा बहुवचन, कटाक्षों का विशेषण; यहाँ eka सीमित करता है — 'केवल, और किसी से नहीं', विशेष-सुचरित का विशेषण
kaṭākṣāḥ — the glances; sudhā-sāra-smerāḥ — beaming with the essence of nectar; sucarita-viśeṣa-eka-sulabhāḥ — attainable only through some special merit.
Two last touches. The glances beam with the very essence of nectar (sudhā-sāra) — their smile is sweetness itself. And they fall on no one cheaply: one earns such a look from Hari only (eka) by some extraordinary good deed (sucarita-viśeṣa). May these glances, so described, bring about our well-being — that is the ten-pada nāndī complete.

May the sidelong glances of Hari — of him who has just risen from his serpent-couch — bring about our well-being: glances that are the waves rising on the braided stream of the flowing rasa of his outpouring compassion; that are the very peers of the loveliness of the petals of Lakṣmī's play-lotus; that beam with the distilled essence of nectar; and that are won by no ordinary luck, but only by some one extraordinary store of good deeds.
