antaḥ-svacchāya nityāya devāya hṛta-pāpmane |
antaḥ-svacchāyato the one utterly clear within — nothing clouds it dat., the honoree of the bow (namaḥ in L2); antaḥ = inside, svaccha = transparent, limpidजो अन्तःकरण में स्वच्छ अर्थात् भीतर से निर्मल एवं पारदर्शी है, उस (देव) के लिए
nityāyato the eternal one, that never changes dat., agreeing with caitanya-jyotiṣeजो नित्य है (आगे कहे जाने वाले चैतन्य-ज्योति का विशेषण) — उसके लिए
devāyato the radiant one — deva, that shines of itselfउस देव के लिए
hṛta-pāpmanewho carries off all sin from whoever turns to him dat.; bahuvrīhi — hṛta = swept away, pāpman = sin, so 'by whom sin is taken away'जिसके द्वारा पाप हर लिया गया है, ऐसे (पापहारी) के लिए
antaḥ-svacchāya nityāya devāya hṛta-pāpmane [caitanya-jyotiṣe namaḥ] — [I bow] to the Light of consciousness: clear right through within, eternal, self-radiant, sweeping away all sin.
This is the opening bow of Bhavabhūti's play. The poet salutes the Light of pure consciousness. Four words tell us what it is like. It is utterly clear within — nothing clouds it. It never changes: it is eternal. It shines of itself: deva. And it carries off all sin from whoever turns to it. Each word is a dative — the honoree of the bow that lands in the next line.
An udāharaṇa of the aṣṭapada-yuktā nāndī — the benedictory verse 'endowed with eight padas' allowed by kārikā 16 (nc.4.2, 'aṣṭābhir daśabhir yuktā kiṁ vā dvādaśabhiḥ padaiḥ'). Quoted from the Mahāvīra-carita (Vīra-carita) of Bhavabhūti, Act 1 — the first verse of the prastāvanā. The pada-count comes out to eight: antaḥ · svacchāya · nityāya · devāya · hṛta-pāpmane · tyakta-krama-vibhāgāya · caitanya-jyotiṣe · namaḥ. This example follows the two just given — the āśīḥ (blessing) and namaskriyā (bowing) types — now showing the eight-worded form.
L2example
tyakta-krama-vibhāgāya caitanya-jyotiṣe namaḥ ||
tyakta-krama-vibhāgāyawho has let go of every division of before-and-after — untouched by time's sequence dat.; krama = succession, vibhāga = splitting-up, tyakta = abandoned: partless, changelessजिसने क्रम (कालक्रम, आगे-पीछे का भेद) के विभाग को त्याग दिया है — अर्थात् जो निरवयव और अपरिवर्तनशील है, उसके लिए
caitanya-jyotiṣeto the Light that is consciousness itself dat., the one bowed to; caitanya = consciousness, jyotis = lightउस चैतन्य-रूपी ज्योति के लिए (जिसे नमस्कार किया जा रहा है); caitanya = चेतना, jyotis = प्रकाश
namaḥI bowनमस्कार है
tyakta-krama-vibhāgāya caitanya-jyotiṣe namaḥ — I bow to the Light of consciousness, which has dropped all division of succession.
Our ordinary world runs in sequence — first this, then that, one stage after another. This Light stands outside all of that. It has dropped every division of before-and-after; no succession touches it, so it is partless and changeless. To that Light of consciousness the poet bows: namaḥ. That single word is the bow the four datives of the first line, and the two here, were all reaching toward.
tyakta-krama-vibhāga names the timelessness of pure consciousness: 'krama' is temporal succession, the before-and-after by which everything worldly is measured out; having 'abandoned' it, the Light has no stages and no change. This is the eighth and last pada of the verse, and 'namaḥ' is the word that makes the whole an aṣṭapada nāndī of the bowing (namaskriyā) flavour.
antaḥ-svacchāya nityāya devāya hṛta-pāpmane tyakta-krama-vibhāgāya caitanya-jyotiṣe namaḥ
antaḥ-svacchāya nityāya devāya hṛta-pāpmane tyakta-krama-vibhāgāya caitanya-jyotiṣe namaḥ।
To the Light that is consciousness itself — utterly clear right through within, so that nothing clouds it; eternal, never changing; self-radiant (deva); sweeping away all sin from whoever turns to it; and having let go of every division of before-and-after, so that no succession of time touches it — to that Light of consciousness I bow.
Illustrative verse quoted for the aṣṭapada-yuktā nāndī of kārikā 16 — a benedictory opening 'endowed with eight padas' (of the bowing / namaskriyā flavour); the opening śloka of the prastāvanā of Bhavabhūti's Mahāvīra-carita, Act 1.
