L1definition
adivyo dharma-putrādir eṣu kṛṣṇo guṇādhikaḥ |
adivyaḥthe adivya hero — the non-divine, purely human type; the third and last of the three kinds of nāyaka, after the divya and the divyādivya just defined in 2.1 nominative subject; its predicate is dharma-putrādiḥअदिव्य नायक (जो देव नहीं, साधारण मानव नायक है) — यह कर्तृपद है, जिसका विधेय धर्मपुत्र आदि हैं
dharma-putra-ādiḥis Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira) and heroes like him — the example that fixes the adivya type nominative predicate; ādi = 'and the rest of that kind'धर्मपुत्र (युधिष्ठिर) आदि हैं; 'आदि' से इसी प्रकार के और भी नायक समझ लें
eṣuamong these [heroes] — i.e. taking the whole set of nāyakas, divine, divine-and-human, and human together partitive locative; the group out of which Kṛṣṇa is now singled outइन (सब नायकों) में — जिस समूह में से अब कृष्ण को अलग छाँटकर दिखाया जा रहा है
kṛṣṇaḥKṛṣṇa — the one Rūpa now lifts above the whole classification nominative subject of the second clauseकृष्ण — यह दूसरे वाक्य का कर्तृपद है
guṇa-adhikaḥsurpasses them all in qualities — he has more excellence than any other hero adhika = 'exceeding'; the compound = 'exceeding in guṇas'गुणों में सबसे बढ़कर हैं ('अधिक' अर्थात् सबको लाँघने वाले)
adivyaḥ — the human (adivya) hero; dharma-putra-ādiḥ — is Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira) and the like; eṣu — among these [heroes]; kṛṣṇaḥ — Kṛṣṇa; guṇa-adhikaḥ — surpasses them all in qualities.
The third and last kind of hero is the adivya — the plain human hero, with no divinity to display: Yudhiṣṭhira (Dharmaputra) and others like him. That completes the list begun in 2.1: divine, divine-and-human, and now human. Having finished the taxonomy, Rūpa makes his Vaiṣṇava turn: among all these heroes of every type, Kṛṣṇa stands highest in qualities.
This finishes the three-fold classification of the nāyaka standard in dramaturgy (from Bharata and the Rasārṇava-sudhākara): divya (a god who shows his majesty, e.g. Kṛṣṇa as defined in 2.1), divyādivya (a god who acts as a man, e.g. Rāma, 2.1), and adivya (an ordinary human hero, e.g. Yudhiṣṭhira). Rūpa then takes the settled scheme and crowns Kṛṣṇa above the whole of it.
L2definition
nāyakānāṁ guṇāḥ sarve yatra sarva-vidhāḥ smṛtāḥ ||
nāyakānāmbelonging to [all] the heroes — of every nāyaka of every type genitive depending on guṇāḥनायकों के — यह षष्ठी 'गुण' पद पर टिकी है
guṇāḥ sarveall the qualities — the full stock of heroic excellences nominative subject of smṛtāḥसमस्त गुण — यह 'माने गए हैं' (smṛtāḥ) का कर्तृपद है
yatrain whom — pointing back to Kṛṣṇa, giving the reason he surpasses the rest relative locative; correlative to the kṛṣṇaḥ of L1जिस (कृष्ण) में — यह सम्बन्धवाची सप्तमी L1 के 'कृष्ण' की प्रतिनिर्देशिका है
sarva-vidhāḥof every kind — not just present, but present in all their varieties nominative, agreeing with guṇāḥसब प्रकार के — यह 'गुण' का विशेषण है
smṛtāḥare declared by tradition [to reside] — the received teaching holds them all to be found there nominative predicate; smṛta = 'held, handed down'माने गए हैं (smṛta अर्थात् परम्परा से कहे व सौंपे गए) — यह विधेय है
yatra — in whom (Kṛṣṇa); nāyakānām — of all the heroes; sarve guṇāḥ — all the qualities; sarva-vidhāḥ — of every kind; smṛtāḥ — are declared by tradition to reside.
Now the reason Kṛṣṇa is supreme. In him — that is what 'yatra' reaches back to — every quality of every hero is said to come together, and of every kind. Whatever excellence any nāyaka possesses, Kṛṣṇa has it too, and in all its forms. That is why, of all the heroes just classified, he alone is guṇādhika, greatest in qualities.
adivyaḥ dharma-putra-ādiḥ [bhavati]; eṣu [nāyakeṣu] kṛṣṇaḥ guṇa-adhikaḥ, yatra [kṛṣṇe] nāyakānām sarve guṇāḥ sarva-vidhāḥ smṛtāḥ.
The third and last kind of hero is the adivya, the plain human hero with no divinity to display — Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira) and others like him. That completes the standard threefold scheme of the nāyaka: divine, divine-and-human, and human. Now among all these heroes of every type Kṛṣṇa stands highest in qualities (guṇādhika), for it is in him that all the qualities of every hero, and in all their kinds, are declared by tradition to come together.
A definition kārikā: it fixes the third nāyaka type (adivya, e.g. Yudhiṣṭhira), closing the threefold classification opened in 2.1, and then makes Rūpa's Vaiṣṇava turn — declaring Kṛṣṇa guṇādhika, supreme over the whole scheme because every heroic quality of every kind resides in him.
