Construed
samyak masṛṇita-svāntaḥ — whose heart is fully softened; mamatva-atiśaya-aṅkitaḥ — marked by an abundance of possessiveness; sāndra-ātmā — dense in nature; saḥ eva bhāvaḥ — that very emotion; budhaiḥ — by the wise; premā — as prema; nigadyate — is called.
Translation
That emotion which fully softens the heart and is marked by an abundance of possessiveness, that very emotion, being dense in nature, is called prema by the wise.

atha bhāvam apy uktvā premāṇam āha—samyag iti |

samyaṅ masṛṇitaṁ bhāvasya prathama-daśāpekṣayā atiśayārdraṁ svāntaṁ cittaṁ yasmin tathā-bhūto yaḥ sāndrātmā niviḍa-svarūpaḥ prathama-daśāpekṣayā paramānandotkarṣaṁ prāpta iti yāvat |
On samyaṅ masṛṇitaṁ and svāntaṁ and sāndrātmā — That whose heart, that is, whose mind, is fully softened — exceedingly moist in comparison to its first stage — and which is dense in nature, of thick essential form, having attained the highest excellence of supreme bliss in comparison to its first stage: that is the meaning.
ata eva kṛṣṇe’tiśaya-mamatvāṅkito bhāvaḥ sa eva premā nigadyate |
On tiśaya-mamatvāṅkito bhāvaḥ and sa eva premā nigadyate — For this very reason the emotion marked by an abundance of possessiveness toward Kṛṣṇa is called prema.
atreyam āśaṅkā—nanu bhāva eva ced upādānaḥ san sāṅkhya-matānusāreṇa premāṇam utpādya svayaṁ premātmiko bhavati, tadā tan-mate upādāna-kāraṇam eva pūrvāvasthāṁ parityajya kārya-rūpeṇa pariṇamati, na tu kāraṇātiriktaḥ svatantraḥ kārya-padārtho’sti |
Here this doubt arises: But if bhāva itself, being the material cause, produces prema in accordance with the Sāṅkhya view and itself becomes composed of prema, then on that view the material cause alone, abandoning its prior state, transforms into the effect-form, and there is no independent effect-entity distinct from the cause.
yathā guḍa eva kam api vikāraṁ prāpya pūrva-rūpaṁ parityajya ca khaṇḍo bhavati, jāte ca khaṇḍe tasmād guḍasya pṛthak sthitir nāsti |
Just as molasses (guḍa) itself, undergoing some transformation and abandoning its prior form, becomes lump-sugar (khaṇḍa), and once the lump-sugar has come to be, there is no separate existence of the molasses apart from it;
जैसे गुड़ ही कोई विकार प्राप्त करके तथा पूर्व रूप को छोड़कर खाँड़ बन जाता है, और खाँड़ के बन जाने पर उससे भिन्न गुड़ की पृथक् स्थिति नहीं रहती;
evaṁ khaṇḍa eva sitā bhavati, sitā eva sitopalā bhavati, tatra sitopalā-daśāyāṁ guḍa-khaṇḍa-sitānāṁ pṛthak sthitir nāsti |
likewise the lump-sugar itself becomes granulated sugar (sitā), and the granulated sugar itself becomes rock-candy (sitopalā), and in the rock-candy stage there is no separate existence of the molasses, lump-sugar, and granulated sugar.
tadvad atrāpi bhāvaḥ pūrvāvasthāṁ parityajya prema-rūpo bhavatu, evaṁ premṇaḥ sakāśād bhāvasya pṛthak-sthitir māstu, tathāgre vakṣyamāṇaṁ premṇa eva sneha-rūpatvam eva snehādīnāṁ rāgādi-rūpatvaṁ ca, tatrāpi snehādibhyaḥ sakāśāt premādi-sthāyi-bhāvānāṁ pṛthak sthitir māstu |
In the same way here too, let bhāva abandon its prior state and become of the form of prema; likewise let there be no separate existence of bhāva apart from prema; and so too, as will be stated ahead, prema itself being of the form of sneha, and sneha and the rest being of the form of rāga and the rest — there too let there be no separate existence of the sthāyi-bhāvas beginning with prema apart from sneha and the rest.
evaṁ sati śrī-rādhikā-prabhṛtiṣu carama-sthāyi-rūpa-mahābhāva eva tiṣṭhatu, na tu rati-prema-sneha-māna-rāgānurāgādayaḥ |
This being so, in Śrī Rādhikā and the others let only the final sthāyī-form, mahābhāva, remain, and not rati, prema, sneha, māna, rāga, anurāga, and so on.
maivam |
Not so.
śrī-kṛṣṇasya hlādinī-śakteḥ sāra-vṛtti-rūpāṇāṁ rati-prema-snehādīnāṁ śrī-kṛṣṇasyaivācintya-śaktitvāt pūrvāvasthām aparityajyaiva bhāvaḥ prema-rūpo bhavati |
Because rati, prema, sneha, and the rest — which are the essence-functions of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's hlādinī potency — belong to Śrī Kṛṣṇa's own inconceivable potency, bhāva becomes of the form of prema without abandoning its prior state at all.
pūrvāvasthāyā atyāgād eva premṇaḥ sakāśād bhāvasya pṛthak-sthitir api jñeyā |
Precisely because the prior state is not abandoned, the separate existence of bhāva apart from prema too is to be understood.
evaṁ-rītyā snehādibhyaḥ sakāśāt premādīnāṁ pṛthak-sthitir apy ūhyā |
In this same manner, the separate existence of prema and the rest apart from sneha and the rest is also to be inferred.
tatra dṛṣṭānto, yathā—śrī-kṛṣṇasya bālya-deha eva kam api mādhuryādy-utkarṣaṁ prāpya bālyāvasthā-parityāgaṁ vinaiva paugaṇḍa-deho bhavati |
There is an illustration for this, thus: Śrī Kṛṣṇa's very childhood (bālya) body, attaining some heightened excellence of sweetness and the like, becomes the boyhood (paugaṇḍa) body without abandoning the childhood state;
evaṁ paugaṇḍa-deha eva pūrvasmād apy utkarṣa-viśeṣaṁ prāpya kaiśora-deho bhavati, na tu prākṛta-manuṣya-śarīrādir iva bālyāvasthāṁ parityajya paugaṇḍāvasthāṁ prāpnoti |
likewise the boyhood body itself, attaining a distinctive excellence beyond even the former, becomes the adolescent (kaiśora) body — and not, as with the ordinary human body and the like, does it attain the boyhood state by abandoning the childhood state.
śrī-kṛṣṇasya bālya-paugaṇḍa-kaiśorāṇām evaṁ bālyād ucita-līlānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ nityatvāt |
Because Śrī Kṛṣṇa's childhood, boyhood, and adolescence, and likewise all His pastimes fitting to childhood onward, are eternal.

But at the manifestation of boyhood the childhood body disappears here and becomes manifest precisely there, in whatever universe the childhood pastime begins within the manifest pastime.

In the same way, in the unmanifest display of this very Vṛndāvana, wherever the childhood pastime begins, there too the manifestation of the childhood body is to be understood.
brahmaṇa āgāmini kalpe vaivasvata-manvantare punar apy atraiva vṛndāvanasya prakaṭa-prakāśe bālya-dehaḥ prakaṭībhaviṣyatīti |
In Brahmā's coming kalpa, in the Vaivasvata manvantara, once again in this very manifest display of Vṛndāvana the childhood body will become manifest.

Just as the sun standing over this continent disappears here at twilight and goes to another continent, and again after four watches becomes manifest over this continent.
līlānāṁ bālyādy-avasthānāṁ ca nityatvaṁ śrī-bhāgavata-ṭīkāyāṁ mahānubhāvair vistārya likhitam |
The eternality of the pastimes and of the states beginning with childhood has been written out at length by the great souls in the commentary on the Śrī Bhāgavata.

But in the case at hand, among the devotees possessing the sthāyi-bhāvas beginning with rati and prema, in whichever devotee there is the arising of a sthāyi-bhāva and so on upon its obtaining its own respective cause, then in that very devotee its manifestation, while the other bhāvas remain unmanifest, is to be understood as its abiding in that same devotee.

Just as among the kāma, krodha, and the rest of worldly people who possess kāma, krodha, and so on, at the time of the arising of one of them the others abide in the form of latent impressions (saṁskāra) — it is to be understood exactly like that.

L1definition
samyaṅ-masṛṇita-svānto mamatvātiśayāṅkitaḥ |
samyaṅ-masṛṇita-svāntaḥwhose heart is fully softened — softened all the way through, not just a little bahuvrīhi (whose svānta = heart is samyak masṛṇita)जिसका अन्तःकरण भली-भाँति कोमल (द्रवित) हो गया है
mamatva-atiśaya-aṅkitaḥand marked by an overflowing sense of "mine" — stamped with intense possessiveness toward the beloved bahuvrīhi; aṅkita = marked/stampedजो प्रगाढ़ ममता से अंकित (चिह्नित) है
samyaṅ-masṛṇita-svāntaḥ — whose heart is fully softened; mamatva-atiśaya-aṅkitaḥ — and marked by an overwhelming sense of "mine."
This line gives the first two marks of the emotion being defined. First: its heart is fully softened — melted all the way through, far more than at an earlier stage. Second: it is stamped with an intense sense of "mine" toward the beloved. Both are grammatically descriptions of one thing, the bhāva named in the next line.
mamatva: literally "mine-ness," the feeling "he is mine." Not selfish possession here, but the deep claim of love on its object.
L2definition
bhāvaḥ sa eva sāndrātmā budhaiḥ premā nigadyate ||
bhāvaḥthe emotion (bhāva) — the subject being defined, carried over from the marks in line 1 nom. sg. — subjectवह भाव
sa evathat very one — precisely that same bhāva, and no other (eva) eva = precisely / none otherवही, अन्य कोई नहीं
sāndra-ātmānow dense in its very nature — thickened, grown intense at its core bahuvrīhi (whose ātmā = nature is sāndra = dense); the third markजिसका स्वरूप सघन (गाढ़ा) है
budhaiḥis what the wise call it — the learned are the ones who give it this name instr. pl. — agent of the passive verbविद्वानों के द्वारा
premā"prema" (love) — the name they give it nom. sg. — predicateप्रेम (कहकर)
nigadyateis called — receives this name passive presentकहा जाता है
sa eva bhāvaḥ — that very emotion; sāndra-ātmā — being dense in nature; budhaiḥ — by the wise; premā — prema; nigadyate — is called.
Now the line names the thing. That very emotion — the one just described — when it also becomes dense in its very nature, is what the wise call "prema." So three marks are given across the two lines: a fully softened heart and an intense sense of "mine" (line 1), plus a dense, thickened nature (this line). The emotion carrying all three is what the learned name prema. Nothing here says it is a different substance from bhāva; it is that same bhāva, named prema once these marks are present.
sāndra: literally "thick, dense" (as of a fluid). Here it means the emotion has grown concentrated and intense at its core — this is the mark the commentators single out as prema's own defining nature (svarūpa-lakṣaṇa), the other two being pointers (taṭastha-lakṣaṇa).

atha bhāvam apy uktvā—samyag iti |
athanow (turning to the next topic) transitional / auspicious openerअब (नया प्रसंग आरम्भ करने वाला शुभ-सूचक)
bhāvamhaving dealt with bhāva (the object he already treated) accusative — object of uktvāभाव को
apitoo — bhāva as well, on top of what came before particle: 'also'भी
uktvānow that he has spoken of it, he moves on gerund: 'having said'कहकर
samyag itihe takes up the verse that starts 'samyak…' pratīka — quotes the verse's first word"समयक्" — इस श्लोक के प्रथम पद से
atha — now; bhāvam api uktvā — having spoken of bhāva as well; samyag iti — [he begins the verse] 'samyak'.
Now Jīva turns to the next topic. He has already covered bhāva. Having done that, he takes up this verse, the one that opens with the word 'samyak'. This one line just frames what follows: the verse now on the table defines prema.
atha here is the standard scholastic 'now' that opens a fresh topic (and carries a note of auspicious beginning); api ('too') signals that bhāva was one item in a sequence and prema is the next.

atra sāndrātmakatvaṁ svarūpa-lakṣaṇam |
atrahere, in this verse locative: 'in this case'यहाँ (इस स्थिति में)
sāndrātmakatvaṁits being dense in nature — that it is thick, concentrated feeling nominative — the subject being classifiedसघन-स्वरूप होना (जिसका वर्गीकरण हो रहा है)
svarūpa-lakṣaṇamis the mark that says what it essentially is nominative — the predicateस्वरूप-लक्षण है
atra — here; sāndrātmakatvaṁ — being dense in nature; svarūpa-lakṣaṇam — is the essential defining mark.
Here Jīva sorts the verse's three descriptions of prema. Of them, 'sāndra-ātmā' — that prema is dense, thick, concentrated feeling — is the svarūpa-lakṣaṇa. That is, this one names what prema essentially is. Density is not a clue that points to prema from outside; density is prema's own nature.
svarūpa-lakṣaṇa vs taṭastha-lakṣaṇa: a svarūpa-lakṣaṇa is a mark built into what the thing is — 'a blue lotus', where the blue is part of the flower itself; a taṭastha-lakṣaṇa is an outside pointer — 'the house with the crow on it', where the crow only helps you find the house and then flies off. Here density is the blue-of-the-lotus mark: it belongs to prema's own essence, so it is the svarūpa-lakṣaṇa.
s3definition
anyad dvayaṁ taṭastha-lakṣaṇam ||
anyad dvayaṁthe other two — the softened heart and the abundant 'mine'-feeling nominative neuter — 'the remaining pair'शेष दोनों
taṭastha-lakṣaṇamare the marks that only help you spot it from the side nominative — the predicateतटस्थ-लक्षण हैं
anyad dvayaṁ — the other two; taṭastha-lakṣaṇam — are the incidental defining marks.
The remaining two descriptions — that the heart is fully softened, and that it is marked by an intense sense of 'mine' toward Kṛṣṇa — are the taṭastha-lakṣaṇa. These do not say what prema is in itself. They stand off to the side and let you recognize prema when you meet it. So the count is settled: one of the three marks is essential (the density), and the other two are only identifying pointers.
taṭastha-lakṣaṇa is literally a mark 'standing on the bank' — off to the edge of the thing, not inside its nature. Like 'the house with the crow on it': the crow lets you pick out the house, then flies away without changing what the house is. So the softened heart and the sense of 'mine' locate prema for us, but density (svarūpa-lakṣaṇa) is what prema actually is.

Having already dealt with bhāva, the author now takes up prema (love). He does this in the verse that starts with the word 'samyak' (fully). This line just tells us which topic and which verse we are moving into.

Take the verse-words apart. 'Fully softened heart' means: the heart has melted far more than it had at bhāva's first stage. 'Dense in nature' means: its very form has become thick and concentrated. Both point the same way. Set against its earlier stage, this state has climbed to the highest pitch of joy. That, he says, is what the verse means.

So here is the upshot. The bhāva that is stamped with an intense feeling of 'Kṛṣṇa is mine' — that very bhāva is what the wise call prema. Nothing new is added; the same emotion, once softened and thickened to this pitch, simply earns the name prema.

atra iyam āśaṅkā — here this doubt arises; nanu bhāvaḥ eva cet upādānaḥ san — but if bhāva itself, as the material cause; sāṅkhya-mata-anusāreṇa premāṇam utpādya — producing prema by the Sāṅkhya view; svayaṁ premātmikaḥ bhavati — becomes itself made of prema; tadā tan-mate — then on that view; upādāna-kāraṇam eva pūrva-avasthāṁ parityajya kārya-rūpeṇa pariṇamati — the material cause alone, dropping its prior state, turns into the effect; na tu kāraṇa-atiriktaḥ svatantraḥ kārya-padārthaḥ asti — and no independent effect exists apart from the cause.
Now an objection is raised. Suppose bhāva is the material cause of prema — the very stuff prema is made from. On the Sāṅkhya principle, a material cause, when it produces its effect, just turns into that effect. So bhāva would drop its old state and become prema. And on that view there is no separate 'prema' standing apart from bhāva — the cause simply is the effect in a new form. The objector's point: then bhāva and prema cannot both exist side by side.
Sāṅkhya: the satkārya-vāda doctrine that the effect pre-exists in its material cause (upādāna-kāraṇa) and the cause merely transforms (pariṇāma) into it, so nothing genuinely new is added. Home meaning: a metaphysics of causation. Here: borrowed only to press the worry that bhāva, on turning into prema, would leave nothing of itself behind.

The objector gives an everyday example. Molasses undergoes some processing, loses its old form, and turns into lump-sugar. Once the lump-sugar is there, the molasses no longer exists separately alongside it — it has simply become the lump-sugar. Mapping: molasses is the material cause (bhāva); lump-sugar is the effect (prema); the changing-over is the causal transformation. The point the objector wants: cause and effect can't coexist, because the cause is used up in becoming the effect.

The example is pushed further. Lump-sugar becomes granulated sugar; granulated sugar becomes rock-candy. By the time you reach rock-candy, none of the earlier three — molasses, lump-sugar, granulated sugar — is present as a thing on its own. Each was swallowed up by the next. The objector is building a chain in which every earlier stage vanishes into the later one, leaving only the last.

Now apply the sugar-chain to devotion. Let bhāva, like molasses, drop its old state and turn into prema — so that bhāva no longer exists apart from prema. And carry it up the whole ladder that the text will lay out later: prema becomes sneha, sneha and the others become rāga and the rest. At each rung the earlier one should vanish, leaving no prema standing apart from sneha, no sneha apart from rāga, and so on. The objector wants the entire series to collapse upward.
sthāyi-bhāva: the stable, standing emotion that grounds a rasa. The escalating series here is rati → prema → sneha → māna → rāga → anurāga → mahābhāva. The objector treats them as the sugar-stages: each replacing and erasing the one before.

Here is the objector's punch line. If every stage really is swallowed by the next, then in Rādhikā and her companions only the last stage, mahābhāva, would survive. Here is the reason the objection fails. Rati, prema, sneha and the rest are not ordinary material stuff. They are the innermost workings of Kṛṣṇa's hlādinī (pleasure) potency, and so they belong to his own inconceivable power. Because of that power, bhāva can become prema without giving up its earlier state. The sugar rule holds for molasses; it does not bind Kṛṣṇa's śakti. So the cause need not be consumed by the effect.
hlādinī-śakti: the joy-giving aspect of Kṛṣṇa's internal potency, of which these loves are the concentrated essence (sāra-vṛtti). acintya-śakti: his power to hold together what ordinary logic says cannot coexist (here, cause and effect both remaining). Home meaning: technical Gauḍīya metaphysics. Here: the exact ground on which the Sāṅkhya cause-into-effect rule is set aside.

Draw the direct consequence. Since bhāva keeps its earlier state, bhāva goes on existing even after prema appears. So bhāva does stand apart from prema — the two coexist. This is the exact opposite of the molasses case, and it is what the objector denied.

tatra dṛṣṭāntaḥ yathā — here is the illustration, thus; śrī-kṛṣṇasya bālya-dehaḥ eva — Kṛṣṇa's very childhood body; kam api mādhuryādy-utkarṣaṁ prāpya — gaining some rise in sweetness and the like; bālya-avasthā-parityāgaṁ vinā eva — without dropping the childhood state; paugaṇḍa-dehaḥ bhavati — becomes the boyhood body.
Now a positive illustration in Kṛṣṇa's own case. His childhood (bālya) body gains a fresh heightening of sweetness and turns into the boyhood (paugaṇḍa) body — yet without ever giving up the childhood state. Mapping: the childhood body is the earlier love (bhāva); the boyhood body is the higher love (prema); the rise in sweetness is the causal deepening. The point: the earlier form is not destroyed when the later one appears. This is offered in support, exactly parallel to bhāva-becoming-prema.
bālya / paugaṇḍa / kaiśora: Kṛṣṇa's childhood, boyhood, and adolescence — his standard threefold age-sequence in Vraja.

evaṁ paugaṇḍa-dehaḥ eva — likewise the boyhood body; pūrvasmāt api utkarṣa-viśeṣaṁ prāpya — gaining a distinct rise beyond even the former; kaiśora-dehaḥ bhavati — becomes the adolescent body; na tu prākṛta-manuṣya-śarīrādiḥ iva bālya-avasthāṁ parityajya paugaṇḍa-avasthāṁ prāpnoti — and not, like an ordinary human body, does it reach boyhood by dropping childhood.
The illustration continues, now with the contrast that makes it bite. The boyhood body rises further still and becomes the adolescent (kaiśora) body. But — and this is the key — it is not like an ordinary human body, which reaches boyhood only by losing its childhood. Kṛṣṇa's forms do not erase the earlier stage; an ordinary body does. Where the analogy stops: ordinary bodies follow the molasses rule; Kṛṣṇa's do not, and it is his case that models bhāva and prema.
prākṛta: 'material, ordinary' — the mundane body, which really does discard its earlier stage. The contrast marks precisely the point where the everyday sugar-and-body logic fails to apply to Kṛṣṇa.

Here is why Kṛṣṇa's earlier forms are never lost. His childhood, boyhood, and adolescence — and all the pastimes proper to each, from childhood on — are every one of them eternal. Because they are eternal, none can be destroyed. That is the ground under the whole illustration: an eternal childhood body cannot simply vanish into boyhood.

kintu paugaṇḍasya prākaṭye — but when boyhood is manifested; bālya-dehaḥ atra antardhāya — the childhood body disappears here; yatra yatra brahmāṇḍe prakaṭa-līlāyāṁ bālya-līlāyāḥ ārambhaḥ — wherever, in the manifest pastime of some universe, the childhood pastime begins; tatra eva prakaṭī-bhavati — just there it becomes manifest.
But eternal does not mean visible in one place forever. When boyhood becomes visible here, the childhood body does disappear from here — it does not cease to exist. It simply shows up wherever, in some universe, the childhood pastime is just then beginning. So the childhood body is only relocating its manifestation, not being destroyed. Disappearing and being annihilated are two different things.
antardhāna: withdrawal from view, not destruction — the standard way an eternal form 'sets' in one place and 'rises' in another.

The same rule holds in the unmanifest Vṛndāvana, not just in the visible universes. Wherever the childhood pastime starts there, the childhood body appears there too. So across both the manifest and the unmanifest realms, the childhood form is always appearing somewhere. It is continuous; only its location of display shifts.

aprakaṭa-prakāśa: the 'unmanifest display' — the eternal Vṛndāvana not visible to worldly eyes, as against the prakaṭa (manifest) pastimes within the universes.

And it recurs on the largest scale. In Brahmā's next kalpa, in the Vaivasvata manvantara, the childhood body will once again become visible here in the manifest Vṛndāvana. So the childhood form that 'set' will 'rise' again in its own time. This closes the case: the earlier stage is never gone, only cyclically shown and withdrawn.

kalpa / manvantara: vast Purāṇic time-cycles — a kalpa is a day of Brahmā; a manvantara is the reign of one Manu, of which Vaivasvata is the current one. Cited to place the childhood body's re-appearance on the cosmic calendar.

A homely second illustration seals it. The sun over our continent 'sets' at dusk — it does not die; it simply moves on to shine over another continent. After four watches (a night's span) it rises over ours again. Mapping: the sun is the eternal childhood body; setting here is its disappearance (antardhāna); shining elsewhere is its manifestation in another realm; the return is its re-appearance. The one sun is always shining somewhere. The analogy proves that withdrawal from view is not destruction; it stops short only in that the sun's motion is spatial while Kṛṣṇa's forms shift by his own power.
dvīpa: a continent / island-land of Purāṇic geography; yāma: a watch of about three hours, four of which make a night. The image is offered in plain support of the eternal-body point.

He gives an everyday illustration to prove the point. Worldly people carry lust, anger, greed, and the rest all together. When one of them — say anger — flares up, the others do not disappear; they sit quietly as saṁskāras, dormant tendencies ready to surface. The mapping: the worldly person is the devotee; the lust-anger-greed set is the set of lasting moods (rati, prema, sneha…); the one that flares up is the mood whose cause is present; the others resting as saṁskāra are the other moods staying unmanifest in the devotee. What it proves: the inactive moods still abide — they are not destroyed. Where it stops: the likeness is only structural — one active, the rest latent. It does not make the devotee's moods mundane defects like lust and anger; those moods are functions of Kṛṣṇa's hlādinī potency, and the comparison is not about their nature.

sarasvatī-ṭhākuraḥ — Sarasvatī Ṭhākura says; samyaṅ-masṛṇita-svāntaḥ = suṣṭhu masṛṇitaḥ ārdrīkṛtaḥ svāntaḥ yasmāt saḥ — the one whose heart is well softened and made moist; mamatvātiśayāṅkitaḥ = mamatvātiśaya-yuktaḥ — joined with abundant possessiveness; iti taṭastha-lakṣaṇa-dvaya-viśiṣṭaḥ — thus marked by the two pointer-marks; yaḥ sāndrātmā = ghanībhūta-svarūpaḥ — which is dense, of thickened form; iti svarūpa-lakṣaṇa-yuktaḥ — thus bearing the essence-mark; bhāvaḥ sa eva — that very bhāva; budhaiḥ premā nigadyate kathyate — is called prema by the wise.
Now Sarasvatī Ṭhākura reads the verse word by word. First word, 'samyaṅ-masṛṇita-svānta': it means the person whose heart has been thoroughly softened, made moist. Second word, 'mamatvātiśayāṅkita': it means joined with an overflowing sense of 'mine.' These two, he says, are the pair of taṭastha-lakṣaṇas — outside pointers that identify prema. Then 'sāndrātmā': its very form has become thick and concentrated — and this is the svarūpa-lakṣaṇa, what prema is in its own essence. The bhāva that fits all three marks is exactly what the wise call prema. So he lines up the verse's three descriptions with the two kinds of defining mark.
taṭastha-lakṣaṇa vs svarūpa-lakṣaṇa: a svarūpa-lakṣaṇa is a mark that is part of what the thing itself is — like 'a blue lotus,' where the blueness belongs to the flower; here 'dense in nature' (sāndrātmā) is what prema is in itself. A taṭastha-lakṣaṇa is a mark that only points the thing out from the side without being part of its essence — like 'the house with the crow on the roof,' where the crow helps you spot the house and then flies off; here the softened heart and the sense of 'mine' identify prema by its effects and its object, but are not its core nature.

This is the reference tag: the same defining verse is found in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 2.23.7 (chapter 23, verse 7), where Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja quotes Rūpa Gosvāmī's definition of prema. It anchors Sarasvatī Ṭhākura's gloss to that place.
Why cited: names where this same definition-verse of prema is quoted — Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya 2.23.7 — anchoring Sarasvatī Ṭhākura's word-gloss to that locus.
