iyaṁ (prema) tu vraja-devīṣu suprasiddhā virājate — this love shines forth, very famous, among the gopīs; āsām ayaṁ prema-viśeṣaḥ kām api mādhurīṁ prāptaḥ — this special love of theirs has attained an indescribable sweetness; tat-tat-krīḍā-nidānatvāt budhaiḥ kāmaḥ iti ucyate — because it is the root cause of their various amorous pastimes, it is called 'kāma' by the wise.
This love shines out, famous above all, in the women of Vraja. Their special love has reached a sweetness that words cannot capture. Because it is the root cause of all their amorous pastimes with Kṛṣṇa, the wise call it by the name 'kāma' (desire).
kāma: in common Sanskrit 'lust, sensual desire' aimed at one's own pleasure; here it is a technical label — the gopīs' selfless love is called kāma only because it drives their love-play, not because it seeks their own enjoyment.

And that this love is famous is proved because we actually find the passage in scripture — the Gopīs' song, 'your soft lotus feet we place on our breasts…' and so on. That very text shows how well known their love is.

Why cited: Scriptural proof (the Gopī-gīta) that the gopīs' love is 'suprasiddhā' — famous in śāstra itself.

Now an objection. In the earlier verse the word 'kāma-rūpā' means only kāmātmikā bhakti — the love whose very nature is kāma. But kāma is just an activity, a thirsting; it is not a bhāva, an emotion of the heart. So the objector claims.
kriyā vs bhāva: kriyā is an action one performs (like the act of wanting, striving); bhāva is a settled feeling one has (like love itself). The objector says kāma is the former — a doing, not a feeling.

The objection continues. If kāma is only an action, then that thirst — the longing for union — could never be raised into the essential nature of prema. An action has no power to become the very heart of a bhāva. (Recall verse 1.2.283 said this bhakti 'takes the thirst into its own essential nature' — the objector says a mere action cannot be taken up that way.)

Here is the reply. Grant that this thirst is an action. Even so, it has a portion that is a mental act, and by that portion it is fully capable of becoming the essential nature. That mental act is itself a loving contemplation — the feeling 'let Kṛṣṇa's happiness come from me.' Understood this way, the inner core of the thirst is already emotion, not mere doing.
bhāvanā: in general usage 'imagining, contemplation'; here it names the emotive inner act of the heart — a settled loving absorption. This is what bridges kriyā (action) and bhāva (emotion): the mental portion of the act just is a bhāva.

evam eva ca svatā-nayanaṁ sidhyati — and in just this way the 'bringing into its own nature' is established.
And so, understood in just this way, the earlier statement holds — that this bhakti 'brings the thirst into its own essential nature.' The objection is answered: because the thirst's mental core is already a loving feeling, it can indeed be taken up into the svarūpa of prema.

Viśvanātha raises the objection. Why do the very authors of scripture call so exalted a love by the word 'kāma' — a word that ordinarily means lust? To answer this, the author speaks the line beginning 'tat-tat…' (because it is the cause of their various pastimes…).

Viśvanātha explains the verse's reason. The word nidāna in the verse means simply 'cause.' This love is the root cause of the various love-pastimes that spring from kāma. Because it causes them, the wise name the love itself 'kāma' — calling the cause by the name of what it produces.
