The verse — decoded
L1objection
atra tyājyatayaivoktā muktiḥ pañca-vidhāpi cet |
atrahere, in this matter of devotional rasaयहाँ (इस प्रसंग में)
tyājyatayāas something to be given up instrumental, predicative — 'in the character of the fit-to-be-abandoned'त्यागने योग्य के रूप में (क्योंकि वह छोड़ी जाने योग्य है)
evaprecisely, and nothing butही (निश्चय ही)
uktāhas been declared, was said [earlier]कही गई है
muktiḥliberation, muktiमुक्ति
pañca-vidhāin its five kindsपाँच प्रकार की
apieven, all five of themभी
cetif it be objected that…; although sets up a concession answered in L2यदि (यह बात मानें तो)
atra — here; muktiḥ — liberation; pañca-vidhā api — even in all five kinds; tyājyatayā eva — precisely as fit-to-be-abandoned; uktā — has been declared; cet — if [one presses this].
Here, in the matter of bhakti-rasa, liberation was declared to be simply something to give up. And that held for all five kinds of it. So one may object: if even the whole set of five muktis was called fit only to be abandoned, then…
The five muktis are sālokya (sharing the Lord's world), sārṣṭi (sharing his opulence), sāmīpya (nearness to him), sārūpya (a form like his), and sāyujya / aikya (merging into oneness with him). Rūpa Gosvāmī had just listed all five as things a devotee sets aside.
L2reply
sālokyādis tathāpy atra bhaktyā nātivirudhyate
sālokya-ādiḥsālokya and the ones after it — that is, the first fourसालोक्य आदि (चार मुक्तियाँ)
tathāpieven so, granting that objectionफिर भी
atrahere, in the setting of devotionयहाँ
bhaktyāwith devotion, so far as devotion goes instrumental of respect / relationभक्ति के साथ / भक्ति की दृष्टि से
na ativirudhyateis not sharply at odds — 'na' negates, 'ati-' means excessively ati- + vi-rudh; the excess is what is denied, not all conflictअत्यन्त विरोध नहीं करती (केवल अत्यधिक विरोध का निषेध है, हर विरोध का नहीं)
sālokya-ādiḥ — sālokya and the rest; tathāpi — even so; atra — here; bhaktyā — as regards devotion; na ativirudhyate — is not greatly opposed.
Even so, sālokya and the other three are not badly at odds with devotion here. The word is 'not greatly opposed' — not 'not opposed at all.' So the first four muktis leave room for bhakti, while the fifth, merging, does not. That is the answer the verse gives to the objection.
'na ativirudhyate' is carefully worded: it denies extreme opposition, not every trace of it. The commentators all seize on this — the first four clash with bhakti only in some measure, not wholly.

Jīva marks the verse he is about to explain by quoting its first words, 'atra tyājya…' This is just a pointer, telling the reader which line the comment attaches to.

Jīva reads the verse's 'api cet' as plain 'although.' Although the four — sālokya, sārṣṭi, sāmīpya, sārūpya — are not opposed to devotion in the extreme, still, he says, in some one respect they ARE opposed. Watch his verb: it turns plural, so he means each of the four, taken on its own. They get felt as unfavorable to bhakti. His reason: across many scriptural passages you hear devotion described in a way that treats these states as getting in its way.
Jīva leans toward the opposition side: 'na atiśayena virudhyate … kintu … virudhyante.' The four are not grossly hostile, yet in some part they still clash — because scripture repeatedly voices devotion as pushing them aside. Do not soften this into full harmony; that is Viśvanātha's move, not Jīva's.

Viśvanātha also reads 'api cet' as 'although.' The four — sālokya, sārṣṭi, sāmīpya, sārūpya — are not opposed to devotion in the extreme. And here is his reason and his conclusion together: because in passage after passage we hear devotion spoken of [even inside these states], there is no absolute opposition. Notice he draws the opposite lesson from the same 'bhakti-śravaṇāt' that Jīva used: for Jīva the hearing shows the four are unfavorable; for Viśvanātha it shows they are not utterly hostile.
Same clause 'tatra tatra bhakti-śravaṇāt,' opposite conclusion. Jīva: because devotion is heard of [as disturbed], the four are opposed in part. Viśvanātha: because devotion is heard of [surviving within them], the opposition is not total. Keep both; do not harmonize the two ācāryas into one reading.
