In my heart he gave the prompting. By that prompting I was set to work. I myself am only a wretched, lowly sort. Even so, he set me going. The whole undertaking is his doing, not mine.
जिसकी हृदय में (दी गई) प्रेरणा से मैं, यद्यपि तुच्छ रूप वाला हूँ, फिर भी (इस कार्य में) प्रवृत्त हुआ।
varāka: an ordinary Sanskrit word for "poor, wretched, pitiable one"; here the author uses it of himself in humility. The commentators note a second reading in which the same syllables (vara-āka…, or vara + rūpa) point instead to Rūpa Gosvāmī's own name and to "the best" — but that śleṣa belongs to the commentary, not to the plain sense of this line, which is simple self-deprecation.

To the lotus feet of that Hari I bow. That Hari is Lord Caitanya. The one who prompted me from within my heart, and the one whose feet I now worship, are one and the same. So the author names Kṛṣṇa here under the name Caitanya, and offers his worship to his feet.
उन्हीं हरि, अर्थात् चैतन्यदेव के चरण-कमल की मैं वन्दना करता हूँ।
vande is plainly "I bow / I worship", not a fancy "I offer obeisance". pada-kamala is a standard set phrase: the feet described as a lotus (soft, beautiful, worthy of worship).
vande का सीधा अर्थ है "मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ / वन्दना करता हूँ", कोई अलंकृत "अभिवादन अर्पित करता हूँ" नहीं। पद-कमल एक रूढ़ समास है: चरण को कमल के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है (कोमल, सुन्दर, वन्दना के योग्य)।

Now Jīva tells us what the author is doing in this second verse. By launching his own book of devotion, the author bows to the Lord Śrī Śrī Caitanya-deva. Caitanya is the descent (avatāra) who purifies the age of Kali. And the bow is aimed in particular at Caitanya's lotus feet, which are the author's own shelter. All of this is done in the verse that begins with the word 'hṛdi' ("in the heart").
अब (ग्रन्थकार) अपनी भक्ति का प्रवर्तन करने के द्वारा कलियुग को पवित्र करने वाले अवतार, तथा विशेष रूप से अपने आश्रय रूप चरण-कमल वाले श्रीश्रीचैतन्यदेव भगवान् को नमस्कार करते हैं — 'हृदि' इस पद्य से।
namaskāra: plainly "a bow," not "obeisance." avatāra: a "descent" of the Lord into the world.
नमस्कार का सीधा अर्थ है "प्रणाम", न कि कोई भारी-भरकम "अभिवादन"। अवतार अर्थात् भगवान् का इस लोक में "अवतरण, उतरना"।

The verse says: "in whose heart, by whose prompting, I was set in motion." But set in motion to do what? Jīva fills the gap: the missing words are "in this Sandarbha" — that is, in composing this very work. So the line means: it is by Caitanya's prompting in the heart that I was moved to write this book.

śeṣaḥ: literally "the remainder"; here the commentator's device of supplying words the verse leaves unstated. Sandarbha: a "composition, treatise" — here the work itself.

Here Jīva opens up a second reading of one word, and never collapses it back. Read one way, the author calls himself 'varāka' — "a wretch" — out of plain humility. But Sarasvatī, the goddess of speech, cannot bear to hear him belittle himself. So she splits the same syllables differently: vara ('the best') + ā ('fully') + kāyati ('she sounds forth'). On her lips the very word proclaims him fully as the best. Both hearings stand together in the one word: the author's humble 'wretch,' and Speech's own praise sounding through him.
'वराक' यह पद ग्रन्थकार ने स्वयं दीनता से कहा; परन्तु सरस्वती उस दीनता को न सहती हुई (उसी शब्द को 'वर + आ + क' में तोड़कर) — 'वर' अर्थात् श्रेष्ठ को, 'आ' अर्थात् भली भाँति, 'क' (√कै से) 'कायति' अर्थात् उच्चारित करती है — ऐसा (श्लेष से दूसरा अर्थ निकलता है)।
This is śleṣa — one string of sound carrying two meanings at once. Jīva leaves both live: varāka ("wretch," humility) and vara-ā-kāyati ("fully proclaims the best," praise). Do not choose between them.
यह श्लेष है — एक ही ध्वनि-समूह एक साथ दो अर्थ धारण करता है। जीव दोनों को जीवित रखते हैं: varāka ("बेचारा", दैन्य) और वर-आ-कायति ("श्रेष्ठ का पूर्ण उद्घोष करती है", स्तुति)। यहाँ इसे बोलने वाली सरस्वती को कहा गया है। दोनों में से किसी एक को न चुनें।

So it is through Sarasvatī herself that the author manages to praise the Lord. And this unpacks the little word 'api' ("even") in the verse. Its force is this: even in my own poetry, the writing happens here only because he prompts it — never by myself. So even the author's own composing is not his doing but Caitanya's.
उसी (वराक शब्द) के द्वारा ही (सरस्वती) उन्हीं की स्तुति करा देती है। 'मेरी कविता में भी उसी की प्रेरणा से ही यहाँ प्रवृत्ति हो, अन्यथा नहीं' — यही 'अपि' शब्द का अर्थ है।
api here is concessive and pointed: "even in my own poetry" — the last place one might expect to credit another, yet even there the doing is the Lord's.
यहाँ 'api' सापेक्ष और सूचक है: "मेरे अपने काव्य में भी" — वह अन्तिम स्थान जहाँ कोई दूसरे को श्रेय देने की अपेक्षा करे, फिर भी वहाँ भी करने वाले भगवान् ही हैं।

He first fixes what 'hṛdi,' in the heart, means here: the heart is the sphere, the place where the prompting works. Then: 'by whose prompting I was set going.' The line does not say set going in what. So the commentator supplies the missing words: 'in this work.' The full sense is — in whose heart, by whose prompting, I was set going to write this very book.
'हृदय रूप विषय में जिसकी प्रेरणा से मैं प्रवृत्त हुआ' — 'इस ग्रन्थ में' यह पद शेष (अध्याहार) है।
iti śeṣaḥ: a routine commentarial device. When the verse leaves a word unsaid, the commentator names the exact phrase 'to be supplied' (śeṣa) to complete the sentence — here 'in this work.'
'iti śeṣaḥ': एक सामान्य टीका-प्रणाली। जब श्लोक कोई शब्द अनकहा छोड़ देता है, तब टीकाकार वाक्य को पूर्ण करने के लिए ठीक उसी वाक्यांश का नाम लेते हैं जिसकी पूर्ति करनी है (शेष) — यहाँ "इस ग्रन्थ में"।

The author calls himself 'varāka,' wretched. On the surface that is just humility about himself. But in truth, says the commentator, read the syllables the other way: va-ra means 'the best,' ā means 'fully,' and -ka(yate) means 'she sounds forth, she voices.' Split like that, the very word that looked self-deprecating becomes praise aimed at the Lord alone. So the goddess of speech, through the author's mouth, is really glorifying Him.
'वराक' यह पद (ग्रन्थकार ने) स्वयं दीनता के कारण कहा; परन्तु वस्तुतः (सरस्वती) 'वर' अर्थात् श्रेष्ठ को, 'आ' अर्थात् भली भाँति, 'कायते' अर्थात् शब्द करती है — इस प्रकार उन्हीं की स्तुति करा देती है, यही अर्थ है।
This is a śleṣa handled by nirukti (etymological splitting): the single word varāka is broken into vara + ā + √kai so that a word of self-blame is turned into praise of the Lord. Compare Jīva, who names Sarasvatī as the one voicing it; Viśvanātha keeps the same split but states it impersonally as 'in truth.'

Finally he explains why the verse says 'api,' 'even.' The point of that one word is this: even in my own poetry, the work here goes forward only because He prompts it, and not any other way. So 'api' quietly extends His prompting from great cosmic matters down to the poet's own verses — nothing the author writes happens on his own steam.
'मेरी कविता में भी उसी की प्रेरणा से ही यहाँ प्रवृत्ति हो, अन्यथा नहीं' — ऐसा 'अपि' शब्द का अर्थ है।
api here is not just 'also' but carries a limiting force the commentator draws out: 'even in something as ordinary as my own poem' — underscoring that no activity, however small, proceeds without the Lord's impulse.

varāka: in ordinary use a term of pity, 'poor wretch, pitiable creature'; here the poet applies it to himself in self-deprecation, and the commentator unpacks it plainly as 'paltry and lowly.'
varāka: साधारण प्रयोग में करुणा का शब्द, "बेचारा, दयनीय प्राणी"; यहाँ कवि आत्म-लघुता में इसे अपने लिए लगाते हैं, और टीकाकार इसे सीधे "क्षुद्र और दीन" कहकर खोलते हैं।

The commentator heads off a worry. The author is himself the crest-jewel of the line of the Gosvāmīs. So why would he call himself wretched? Only because he is overcome by extreme humility. That, and nothing else, is why he speaks this way.
(ग्रन्थकार) स्वयं गोस्वामी-कुल के चूड़ामणि होते हुए भी, केवल अत्यन्त दीनता के वश होने के ही कारण यह उक्ति कहते हैं।
cūḍāmaṇi: literally the 'crest-jewel' worn on the head; used figuratively for the finest, foremost member of a group — here, the greatest of the Gosvāmīs.
चूडामणि: शब्दशः सिर पर धारण किया जाने वाला "शिरोमणि"; लाक्षणिक रूप से किसी समूह के सर्वश्रेष्ठ, अग्रगण्य सदस्य के लिए — यहाँ गोस्वामियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ।

apithe word 'api' (even/though) [is now taken up] the particle being glossed, lifted from varāka-rūpo'pi in the verse'अपि' (यही पद पद्य के 'वराक-रूपोऽपि' से लिया गया)
yasya kartṛ-bhūtasya gaurasyaof Gaura, who is the one doing it genitive; kartṛ-bhūta = 'having become the agent', i.e. the real doerजो कर्ता-रूप हुए गौर, उनकी
hṛdi manasiin the heart — that is, in the mind locative; the commentator glosses hṛdi with its plain synonym manasiहृदय अर्थात् मन में
preraṇayāby his prompting instrumental of means — 'by way of his urging'प्रेरणा के द्वारा
hṛd-viṣayānujñayāthat is, by his sanction working through the heart instrumental, restating preraṇayā; hṛd-viṣaya-anujñā = 'permission whose sphere is the heart'हृदय रूप विषय की अनुज्ञा से (यही प्रेरणा का पुनःकथन)
pravartitaḥ preritaḥI was set going — that is, I was impelled nominative past participle; preritaḥ is the plain gloss of pravartitaḥप्रवृत्त अर्थात् प्रेरित किया गया
api — [the word 'even' is taken up]; yasya kartṛ-bhūtasya gaurasya — of Gaura, who is the real doer; hṛdi manasi — in the heart, that is, in the mind; preraṇayā — by his prompting; hṛd-viṣaya-anujñayā — that is, by his sanction working through the heart; pravartitaḥ preritaḥ — I was set going, that is, impelled.
api — 'अपि' पद; yasya kartṛ-bhūtasya gaurasya — जो कर्ता-रूप हुए गौर, उनकी; hṛdi manasi — हृदय अर्थात् मन में; preraṇayā — प्रेरणा से; hṛd-viṣayānujñayā — हृदय रूप विषय की अनुज्ञा से; pravartitaḥ preritaḥ — प्रवृत्त अर्थात् प्रेरित किया गया
Now the commentator takes up the middle of the verse. Gaura is the one actually doing this. It is in the heart — meaning, in the mind. And it is by his prompting. That prompting is really his sanction, given through the heart. So "I was set in motion" means: I was impelled by him.
'अपि' (के प्रसंग में) — जो कर्ता-रूप हुए गौर, उनकी हृदय अर्थात् मन में (दी गई) प्रेरणा से, अर्थात् हृदय रूप विषय की अनुज्ञा से, मैं प्रवृत्त अर्थात् प्रेरित किया गया।
preraṇā vs anujñā: preraṇā is an active 'urging, pushing forward'; anujñā is 'permission, sanction.' The commentator equates them here to show the Lord's prompting is not compulsion but an inward go-ahead granted in the heart.
प्रेरणा और अनुज्ञा: प्रेरणा एक सक्रिय "प्रेरित करना, आगे बढ़ाना" है; अनुज्ञा "अनुमति, स्वीकृति" है। टीकाकार यहाँ दोनों को समान ठहराते हैं यह दिखाने के लिए कि भगवान् की प्रेरणा बाध्यता नहीं, अपितु हृदय में दी गई एक आन्तरिक अनुमति है।

The commentator closes with the last words of the verse. "That Hari" is Lord Caitanya-deva — the same person he names again as Gaura-Hari, as Kṛṣṇa-caitanya. "His lotus feet" simply means his lotus-like feet. And these I bow to. A cross-reference to the Anubhāṣya (2.19.134) is added.

hari / gaura-hari / kṛṣṇa-caitanya: the commentator strings the names to make plain that the single person of the verse is at once Hari, the golden Gaura form, and Kṛṣṇa-caitanya — one Lord under three names.
हरि / गौर-हरि / कृष्ण-चैतन्य: टीकाकार नामों को एक साथ पिरोते हैं ताकि यह स्पष्ट हो कि श्लोक का एक ही व्यक्ति एक साथ हरि, स्वर्णिम गौर-रूप, और कृष्ण-चैतन्य है — एक ही भगवान् तीन नामों से।
